Yes - that could be it. Which registration district is it in?
I've been distracted by the Barnstaple District records, assuming Barnstaple town only - of course the marriage, baptisms etc could be in any parish in the area - Ilfracombe is a possibility too (I think Bideford is another District). I'll keep checking the registers at NDRO (may have to be next week now). Unless Barb applies for a certificate, the only thing positively giving Barnstaple as a town is Charles' death certificate. It may be that the family did live there at some time, but the marriage, baptisms (if in church) were elsewhere

Hi Mary
I really would have thought either Barnstaple or Bideford, although there are other possibilities - Ilfracombe, Appledore, maybe even Braunton. Not all of these are in Barnstaple Reg District though - I think a certificate will be needed to tie them down precisely - it does seem strange that there is no sign of any of them in 1871 - had they already left the country do you think?

I've checked all the available transcipts in paper for the towns most likely, with no luck. I'm afraid I havn't the time to check to microfiches. I think, Barb you may have to apply for a certificate for the marriage of John & Martha, or the births of John junior, Eva or even (as a gamble) Charles Parkin (1861) & hope that it pinpoints where they lived

Hi Blue angel 2, I've been following your research with interest, hope you won't mind me trying to help you, Horrell is a name that was familiar to me some years ago when I lived in North Devon, there was two families called Horrell living in the village of Dolton which is not too far from Barnstaple (14 miles). if you look on the Dolton website www.dolton.org.uk there are three Horrells on 'People past and present' in the school photograph from 1937, it may not help you a lot in your quest but I remember their father William Horrell was a sergeant in the first world war, so would probably be on the 1901 census. Hi again Barb, Just noticed on the Dolton website I gave you earlier, Robert Horrell is also looking for members of the Horrell family, he is a decendant of Michael Horrell of Black Torrington, North Devon, see the last entry in the Dolton guestbook. Bill.

I am from Australia researching the Hurrell family from England. I have a Thomas Hurrell born 8.3.1867. His parents were Edward Hurrell and Mary Sandwell (no bdm). Thomas had the following siblings:- Alfred, Charles, Emily Mary, Frederick Philip, Matilda Ann, William Edward. Can you connect our two families? Regards carmel

Hi Blue Angle 2,
I am researching my Horrell ancestors from the Barnstaple area and I have noted your posts. I have not however come across either a Charles or a Thomas Horrell that fits your search.
I did however find a lady Hurrell burried in Black Torrington Church yard 1900 - 1983 much latter I know, but that is may be another location that Hurrell's live in Devon.
Cheers Bob Horrell[
quote author=Blue_angel2 link=topic=290275.msg1729177#msg1729177 date=1204714948] Hi all, After searching for my elusive ancestor for the past couple of years, and despite now knowing his full correct name and birthplace, I have been unable to find out anything further about his parents, childhood or any other siblings he may have had.
I am hoping that someone will be able to help me find some record of him in Barnstaple where he was born, and find some information that will lead to the remainder of his family.
His name was Charles Thomas Hurrell, and he was born in 1862/1863, Barnstaple, Devon, according to his death certificate, which is the only thing i have to go on at present, as i can find no immigration/emigration records for him, indeed no reference to him at all in England. He married Margaret Donnelly in New South Wales, Australia.
I will be very grateful for any help anyone is able to provide to help me solve this puzzle a bit further. cheers for now, Barb
ps. If he was born in Barnstaple, which church parishes would be nearby that he or his siblings could perhaps have been baptised in, or even his parents married in??? Do they have records online?
