Which Cemetery?
« on: Saturday 10 May 08 09:40 BST (UK) »

Hi. I am after some help. I have an ancestor, Sarah Brown whom died in 1877 in Holborn. She lived most of her life in Clerkenwell, so I am assuming she died there. Which cemetery is she more than likely to be in? Would it be St Pancras Cemetery? Also how can I check. Is there an online service. Any help appreciated.

Hi Lisa

Islington & Camden Cemetery Service could be a good place to start, contact details (phone, email) are here

http://www.islington.gov.uk/Leisure/outdoor/cemeteries.asp

or here

Hi Dawn. Thankyou for this information. I emailed them but unfortunately they did not have my Sarah Brown on their record. I thought maybe she was buried in St James Clerkenwell but I don't think they had burials there at that date. I can't think where else she may have been buried. I was thinking of getting her death certificate but I was hoping to check for her burial first to make sure I had the right one as Brown is such a common name.

Burials stopped at St James Clerkenwell around 1853.

The death cert won't tell you where she's buried.

I'll have a rummage around and get back to you.

Ok, here's some more but they are long shots

City of London cemetery

http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/Corporation/our_services/health_safety/cemetery_crematorium/burial_registers.htm

Some of their registers are online with more coming soon, you may get away with a free look-up as you overseas but you will need a date of death. Or you can wait to see what comes online

East Finchley (formerley St Marylebone)

http://www.westminster.gov.uk/communityandliving/burials/eastfinchley.cfm

Westminster Cemetery (at Hanwell)

http://www.westminster.gov.uk/communityandliving/burials/hanwell.cfm

The registers for East Finchley & Hanwell are at Hanwell.

Highgate Cemetery

http://www.highgate-cemetery.org/index.asp

click on visitors, they charge for searching

Then there's Kensal Green

http://www.kensalgreencemetery.com/contact/index.html

The last I knew was the Friends Association charges for look-ups, but again try for free

Did Islington & Camden try Hampstead  as well as St Pancras?

Don't know what else to suggest. Maybe another Rootschatter will join in.
