John Armstrong & Mary of PA
« on: Friday 16 May 08 20:48 BST (UK) »

Hello All,
Does anyone have the 1790 census details for John Armstrong b about 1736 & wife Mary (nee Kennedy) in Pennsylvania? I think they had a son, John b 1773 in PA, too.
Many thanks,
Bob

I think Mary Armstrong (nee Kennedy) was born in 1738 in Chambersburg, Franklin Co, PA

Hi Bob,  this a tough query!

In the 1790 census,  the name of head of household, headcounts of free white males and females, other free persons, number of slaves, town or district are all that can be found.  Spouses, other family members ages/birthdates, birth places are not indicated.

There are 17 John Armstongs in PA.   None indicate Chambersburg or Franklin Co. as a location.

Have your tried looking for local area histories??

Thanks for that, Lissa
I didn't realise that there were so many John Armstrongs there! I have the same problem in Scotland & England. I read somewhere that in the late 1700's in Britain, something like 85% of the male population was called John, William or Thomas!
I'll try to narrow down the field with some more research.
Thanks for all your efforts - much appreciated.
Cheers,
Bob

50 + Kennedy Households in Pennsylvania  in 1790  ---  again, none indicating the township/county you mention.

Sorry.....no easy answers on this one......

Thanks for all the searches, Lissa
These aren't the most unusual surnames for the area!
Cheers,
