Washington DC grave search - COMPLETED THANK YOU.
« on: Saturday 10 May 08 18:47 BST (UK) »

I am really struggling to find a death notice and location of the grave for George Grindley, a Civil War veteran who died (I believe) in 1922 aged 81.

He was living at 44 Seaton Place, Washington DC.

I have recently found an image of him on a website so this has made me give this search another try.

I have asked the following cemeteries who all say he is not buried there;

Mount Olivet
Glenwood
Prospect Hill
Fort Lincoln

Can anyone please point me in the right direction? I'm close to giving up through frustration, but I would really like to complete this search.

Thank you,

B.

What is the possibility that he was buried at Arlington National Cemetery?  You didn't say, but I presume that he fought for the North since he was living in Washington, D.C.

Just checked several censuses, and on the 1900 it says he has been in country for 34 years:  This implies he arrived too late to have been in Civil War.  What source do you have that he was?

Thank you but I have all the details from all censuses and his service history.

Born in the parish of Llandilo Fawr, County of Carmarthenshire, Wales, on March 20th 1841 and died Washington D.C. in1922.

Arrived  New York, Castle Garden, as an immigrant on March 9th 1852 along with his parents George and Elizabeth Ambrose Grindley and four siblings.

Enrolled in the service of the Army of the United States at Camp Morrow, Portsmouth, Ohio, on October 15th 1861 and appears on the Company Muster-in Roll of Company ‘E’ , 56th Regiment, Ohio Infantry for October 28th 1861. Recorded in the Muster-in Roll of Capt. Evans’ Co  – subsequently Company ‘E’ -  as a Corporal, November 28th 1861.

Hosptalised in Cincinatti May 23rd 1862 to July 5th 1862 returning to his Regiment on July 6th.

Mustered-out January 31st 1864 at Madisonville La and mustered-in at that location on Feb 1st 1864 having re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer at New Iberia La on Dec 17 1863.

Promoted  from Corporal to Sergeant on June 1st 1864.

Detached to HQ Dept. of the Gulf, New Orleans La on November 3rd 1864 and served in various administrative capacities in that HQ until discharge as a Supernumary non-commissioned officer on February 6th 1866.

Made his home in New Orleans marrying and raising his family there until the latter part of 1890 when he moved to Washington D.C.- followed by his family - for employment as an Accountant in Government Service.

I will at some point conrtact Arlington, but it seems you can write or phone, but not e-mail, so I'm checking out other possibilities first.

Hi Bev,

Found the following link to Veteran Cemeteries.  Unfortunately, I didn't find him in Arlington.  Here is the link so you can look through it.

Hope you have some luck with it.

Thanks genealiza, I've tried that one, but still no luck I'm afraid - trying all different variations of spelling as well.

I'm just not getting anywhere.  Sad

We are now 99% sure that George died on the 29th December 1922, so finding a death notice in the paper would be a huge step forward if anyone can help there.

Thanks,

Bev.  Smiley

Thank you - that pensions card is where I had the date of 29th December from, but I have just had a reply from someone on another site saying that she has seen an obit from 26th December 1922 for George saying that he was to be buried in Arlington National cemetery.

I have asked her whether she has the obit, as that is certainly what I want, because I haven't been able to find one yet. There isn't one in the Washington Post, although there are a few mentions of him in there, while he was alive.

I think I'll have to write to Arlington now to check whether this latest report is correct.

Thank you.  Smiley

Oh my goodness thank you so so much!

This has been such a long search which has been dormant for a while now, because we couldn't get any further, then suddenly last week I found an image of George on a new website about the Civil War, and since then everything has come together!

I now have the obit but I don't yet know which paper it was in - I have asked, so I'm waiting for a reply.

It says he died suddenly on December 23rd at home.

Thank you a million times over for ringing and finding out where his grave is.

I've just had a reply and the obit was in the Washington Post on December 26th 1922.

I've searched the Post so many times online by using the search, I don't know how it didn't come up, but the person who found it has full access, so I'm so grateful to her.

Thank you again (and again and again!)  Grin

Here it is;

If you click on the photo it will enlarge.

The website is very slow for us over here some reason, but the administrator is going to put all of George's details on for me, so I can now let him know where George is buried as well!

What a terrific result !!!

I am surprised with the interest shown by researchers and the fact that many National Cemeteries have indexes on-line that Arlington hasn't followed suit.

It is an amazing cemetery and of course I do understand what an undertaking it would be to put it on-line.  There is quite a story behind the formation of the cemetery and the fact that the first burial was actually that of a slave of Robert E. Lee the original owner of the property.

There must be a reason I can't think of because they spare no expense when it comes to upkeep, ceremonies and tours of the cemetery.

Have you obtained his pension file from the National Archives?

http://www.archives.gov/

Federal Military Pension Application - Civil War and Later Complete File (NATF 85D)

I've looked at the pension files for three veterans who (unlike Grindley) didn't do much during the war, but the files were filled with all sorts of useful documents and valuable details. The complete file now costs $75 (they upped the price recently), but it might be worth it.
