Thomas Harper Hunts /Cambs. / Gamlingay area
« on: Sunday 06 July 08 10:47 BST (UK) »

I am trying to find a baptism for Thomas born 1787 in Holywell. I know he married an Elizabeth Barringer in 1809 at Abbotsley. Can anyone help? Any other mention of the Harpers in Holywell much appreciated.  I have been informed that there are no records of Harper's in Holywell. There was a Thomas born 13/1/1788 in Gamlingay to a John and Lucy but I don't know if he was right one. Do you know of any others? I am assuming it would be close to Abbotsley. Thanks Wendy.

wob58,
There's a baptism on the IGI at Gamlingay for a "Tommas" HARPER on 13th Jan 1788, but this is quite a few country miles to the south-west of Holywell.  Father given as John, mother as "Lusey".
Perhaps not your family, and you've already spotted this one.

They married in Abbotsley, Hunts, both otp. There's no baptism for Thomas in Abbotsley.

There are no Harpur baptisms or marriages in Holywell, Hunts, on the BVRI, nor are there any burials on the NBI.

What's the evidence that he was from Holywell?

Abbotsley is only three miles across the fields from Gamlingay, Cambs

Thanks for your replies. I have no evidence that he was born in Holywell I think that is just something that has come down the family. Would the marriage record say of this parish if he was living there or did he have to be born there? It could well be that he was born in Gamlingay, I did find that record but don't know if it  was him. However if there is no record of any Harper's in Holywell then it looks likely, especially if it is so close. Thanks again Wendy.

Hi again, David,
Abbotsley's definitely a lot closer than Holywell!  So perhaps my suggestion was not all that far from the mark after all...

Wendy,
Do you know who Thomas's parents might have been - would John and Lucy/Lusey have fitted O.K?  Do you have all those PR's, including for Gamlingay, at your fingertips, David, otherwise I'll have a look myself when next I visit the CCRO...

Bonjour Keith, I think your Gamlingay find could be very close to the mark!

Wendy, the Abbotsley marriage stated that both were of this parish, ie they were resident there at the time of the marriage. Not the same thing at all as their birthplace.

What were the names of Thomas' children? Did he have a daughter named Lucy, which might be an indication that he was the Gamlingay Thomas?

I've got the Abbotsley transcript, but that's the only one I've got out of the places mentioned.

There's a marriage in 1787 at Waresley, Hunts, of John Harper of Hatley St George and Lucy Endersby, which might be the parents of the Thomas baptised at Gamlingay. Waresley is between Gamlingay and Abbotsley, and Hatley St George is less than two miles from Gamlingay.

Hi again, Thomas's children were Joseph 1810  William 1812   John 1814  Ann 1817  Thomas 1819  Benjamin 1821  Elizabeth  1823   Hannah and Mary 1827 I haven't found a Lucy. Again the marriage with John and Lucy is great. I have had a quick look on IGI and found a couple more children for John and Lucy one of whom is a William 1789 and this also fits in with what I knew.Wendy

I think you need to do some more work on Thomas from Gamlingay before accepting that he's the one who married Elizabeth Baringer. Did he die as a child? Are there any other Thomas Harper marriages which might be him? The witnesses at the Abbotsley marriage don't add much - Jonathan Lincoln and William Cade, Clark (William acted as witness for most of the marriages at this time)

A website which you may already know of is http://www.cfhs.org.uk/Search.html which has baptism and burial indexes for Cambs 1801-37. The burial index shows a John Harper age 60 buried at Gamlingay in 1818, but no sign of Lucy.

I suspect that Lucy may have died at some time between 1798-1800 as there's a marriage of a John Harper to Susan Collins in Gamlingay in 1800. You would need to check it out to see if John was named as a widower, and if there's a burial of Lucy and of any other Harpers 1787 onwards

In 1841 a Susan Harper age 63 not born in Cambs was living in Gamlingay in the household of William 50 and Martha 39 Jones. William Jones married Martha Harper in Gamlingay in 1822, and Martha was the daughter of John and Susan, baptised in 1802.

That's because you're on Rootschat, Wendy!
David has given you a very precise idea of what the options with your HARPER family are.  I'll have a look in the Gamlingay PR's next time I'm at the CCRO to see whether there's anything more to add to the jigsaw.
Have been away for the day in North London, only just arrived back...
