Hi there
I have a family story that two of my great aunts were sent to live in a convent from about 1905 to 1913 and wondered if there was any way of finding info on them without knowing which convent they were at?
The girls names were Gracie Marie PREE b 1895, and Mary Louise PREE b. 1899. Father: Frederick Henry PREE, Mother: Louise Elisa Seraphine Marie PREE. They lived in Surrey mostly, but moved around a lot ie: Croydon, South Norwood, Epsom etc.
From a 1906 birth cert, I have the mother's address as 34 Champion Park, Lewisham. The map now shows that to be the Salvation Army, William Booth College. I don't know if it was the same then. So perhaps they had nowhere else to go, hubby died in the Croydon Mental hospital the following year and hadn't been working for years. He'd been taking mercury for 8 years prior to admission!!
Any ideas would be appreciated Many thanks Hilary

Hello Hilary,
The Champion Park you have on the birth certificate is probably the one in Sydenham, not Denmark Hill. In 1901 there is a John Quinn living at No.34.
RG13/556; folio 66; page 9
The link below will show you where Champion Rd and Crescent are located. I'm not sure if Champion Park became Champion Rd or not, but the enumerators route would imply that it did.

Hi Phil
Well, I don't know anything about the area, I only have the info on the certificate which says Lewisham. When I entered that into the map search it came up with the one near Denmark Hill. They were living in Beckenham prior to the Champion Park birth so that doesn't help. It looks like the Salvo's connection is wrong, thanks for that.
Still wondering if there is any way to find out about the girls in the convent though.

You might try looking at the local workhouse/hospital records, to see if Frederick Henry Pree's entries also mention what had become of the rest of his family.
Do you know which church the family attended, or at least which one the parents married at?
I see that the mother remarries in 1909 (in Romford), Gracie marries in 1914, and Mary in 1919 (both the girls in West Ham, so maybe look in that area?). Gracie had some children in West Ham, Mary had at least one son in Hambledon district. Are you in contact with any descendants of Gracie and Mary?
(Gracie's marriage certificate, in particular, might give some good hints).

Hi, You might find something by looking at the Charles's Booth's Poverty maps. If you put in the name of the strret it will show a map of the area in 1898 and one today. Then you can search around the neighbouring area and see what you can find. You might be lucky and find a convent nearby. http://booth.lse.ac.uk Good luck, Paulene Wonder why he took the mercury? Poor chap - poor family! Sad.

Hi Jorose I have the records for FH Pree from the hospital and they don't mention anything about the family. Yes, Louise married Sydney Smith in 1909 and I have the marriage cert which gives her address as Oban Street, Barking. They were married at the Register Office.
Her marriage to FH Pree was at St. Mark's Church, South Norwood, Surrey. I feel like I'm looking for a needle in a haystack because I don't even know where to start looking. I don't have any christening records, because I have no idea what church they may have used regularly. I'm in Australia which makes it just a bit harder, just using the internet. No I'm not in contact with any of the decendants, it's a bit of a brick wall. I have both the girls marriage certs. no help there.
Paulene, Thanks for the link for Charles Booth, I will see what comes up with all the addresses I have from birth certs etc. for this family. I presume that the mercury had something to do with the illness that caused is admission to the hospital, the records say Heredity Syphilis and General Paralysis. Poor chap was very ill I imagine, the poor wife had a lot on her shoulders with 6 children (2 in the convent) by the time Fred was admitted to hospital.

Hi, This site might help you track down the churches they went to - you can choose the distance and denomination. www.genuki.org.uk/cgi-bin/churches?CCC=LAN,GR=SO960900,DIST=4 Paulene P.S. Just change place name in Gridref/place box. Very sad story - hope there was a happier ending
