Moston Cemetery - Alexian Brothers
« on: Saturday 10 May 08 23:29 BST (UK) »

Hi

Loads of wonderful Rootschatters have helped me on the very long and winding journey to pin down my Hoey Ancestors from Ireland in Salford.

I wonder if anyone can help me with any or all of this request.  All of the Salford branch of my family would be really pleased.

Myggrandmother's brother George Albain Hoey became an Alexian Brother.  I always knew that and that most of the family in the area are buried at Moston Cemetery which was looked after by the brothers.

He is not buried at Moston, but died on the Continent - Belgium.?  I know he was at Henri Chappelle , Marienthal?, from a copy of a letter.

I've been talking to my Auntie though and also looked more closely at Moston.  George was known as Brother Joseph.  I found him on 1891 at Moston with a very small group of Brothers as carers of the cemetery  at Moston.

In 1901, he is also at Moston, but looking at the returns, there seems to be a larger establishment, and he is also there.  I wonder if it is a nursing home.  When he was in the Monastery in Belgium, it seemed to be a nursing home for men.  I wonder if this was a similar establishment.?

My auntie told me that although Brother Joseph died abroad, there was a memorial to some brothers including him at Moston.  I think I've got this right.  I think it was on the outside wall of the chapel and on the back wall.

She also gave me some of our grave numbers.  the main ones are a couple of graves that look from Ken's wonderful plans and Google Earth to be in the trees behind the chapel.  Apparently a traditional Sunday afternoon stroll was up to Moston, to wander around the graves and take part in the afternoon service.

What I'm wondering if anyone can help me with is:

Is the chapel still there and used?  Is the memorial still there, and what does it say?  Does it mention Bro Joseph Hoey?  Is there still a home there?  Are the buildings still there?  Are the grave really overgrown in the trees, or just in amongst them?

I would love any more information really.  I did looki for more information on the Alexians but only came up with  very basic stuff, and stuff for vocationss.

If anyone could help with any of that, or even take photographs of any of it from the ground, I would love it, and I know an elderly relative who used to go when she was little would be delighted.

thank you all for reading.

The Nursing Home is there- or rather a lovely modern one with a beautiful chapel! My (adopted) aunt was there a few years ago and she thoroughly enjoyed living there when she was too frail to care for herself.

Hi Ken and Heywood

Thank you again for all your efforts.

Thank you for your interest, Ken.  I'll get out the grave numbers and come back on line.  I didn't like to ask for specific graves.

I was told one of the graves didn't have a stone.  I think one of them may be a sort of wall and table type but quite low if it's at all legible.

I'll piut them online.

Thank you both for the links.  It was great to see the old pictures when I realised much of it was gone.  It's great to see the work continuing andf it looks a great place.

Do I gather though that the old chapel and the Brothers memorial will have gone, if there's a new one in the hospital?

I loved the hospital site, Heywood.  Thank you very much.  I had a good tour, but I'll be going back to the history later.

Thank you again.

Best wishes

Hi Ken

Thank you again for your kind offer.

I'm hoping I've got these right.  Icopied them from grave[a[ers/notes off my auntie.  I'm sure they will be, but she told me the name of the area and it was something like Casa Sancti, or similar.  Domo Sancti?  It didn't start with B anyway, and these numbers do.

One of them doesn't have a letter.

these are the numbers:  I think the first group will be together.

B524 Hoey/Butler, including Bro Joseph's parents.  Possib;y bought by Margaret Ann Hoey when John James Hoey died.

B442 Patmore/Diggle  Probably bought by Deighten Patmore.

K211

All Diggle(s)  Possibly bought by Nathan ot Thomas, my ggf and gggf.

The diagram/plan looks clear, but I don't know how complicated it is in real life.  Anything would be really appreciated.

Thank you again.

Hi Heywood.

Yes, I'd wondered about that.  If it isn't still there, I'd love to kknow what happened to the memorial and whether anyone transcribed it.  I'd like to know about Belgium too.

I'll wait though and see what I find with a better look at the history part of the site, and what people tell me.  I'll have another look for Henri Chappelle in case there's anything new on line.  I've got a picture.

One thing I havve already found is that the Alexians were founded in Belgium and that caring for elderly men was always  a great part of their work.

I'll keep you posted.

Thank you again.

Could find only one Grave for you B524 Hoey

K211 Has gone "even had grave workers looking for it"

B442 Has a headstone belonging to a John Keene who died in 1880

The Campo Santo is a mess and all barred off, you cannot see most of the names on the plaques

Asked in the office about memorials to the Aleaxian Brothers and was told they are all over the place "they meaning graves". Little chapel is still there but for some strange reason I did not look at the walls ---- will go back later and have a look

Send me your email addy via a PM and I will forward the photos I have for you

Hi Ken

Thank you very much.

I can't believe how quick you were.

They sound like they've really had a field day at Moston!

I wonder what their plans are.  Plans have been muted to reuse some of our Carlisle ones, but at least it's beautifully kept.  That's a shame.  From what we have, these graves have been used well within living memory.

Thank you for doing the photo's.  I still can't wait to seee them.  And on such a warm, pollen laiden morning!

I did check the numbers aagin with what I have by the way, and if what |I've got is correct I've got the correct graves.

Thank you again, Ken and best wishes.
