Struggling with James Walker and his father John
« on: Sunday 11 May 08 17:25 BST (UK) »

Hi,

Really hoping someone can help me here.  James WALKER marries Elizabeth Dodd 14th December 1852 Manchester Cathedral.  His occupation is shown as Mechanic, although later in life he is a spindle & fly maker.

Wife's age is correct and 20,  he says he is 22, so born 1830 ish.  Marriage cert says his father is JOHN WALKER - shoemaker.

I have found James on the unfilmed 1851 Manchester census.  He is is lodgings as a mechanics apprentice BUT AGE IS 15??? Making him only 16 when he marries  Undecided

Later on his age always comes out as being born 1830/31.

The problem is I cannot find a James Walker with a father John who is a shoemaker on the 1841 census.  Also I cannot find John Walker on ANY census (including 1851 unfilmed) who is a shoemaker who would fit in.

Have traced witnesses on their marriage cert - both related to bride.

Please please, any help would be appreciated.

Is this a possibility in 1841? The family is in Bury - not that far away from Manchester - and James did move north of Manchester later on.

HO107/550/11/fo 44/p 5
Bank Lane, Walmersley, Bury

John Walker,35,Clogger
Nancy Walker,45
Mary Walker,14
Thomas Walker,12
James Walker, 11
Richard Walker,6
Margaret Walker,1

All born in county, except John

The same family are in Heap in 1851 at HO107/2213/481
where all children except James are present.

Hi

Not sure with that one.  I have found a James Walker, who I think is the son of the family in Heap.

1851 H107/2213/491  - and not that very far away from parents  Undecided

On his marriage certificate it seems odd that he should put shoemaker for his father when his wife puts clogger for hers.  You would expect if John was a clogger he would have put clogger like his wife did  Huh

I'm stumped on this one I'm afraid.

Maybe John Walker died before 1841.

The age 15 on the 1851 may not be accurate. It could be just a misreading of an original in very poor condition.

Hi skb

I think I may have found  him, but I don't see how I can ever prove it.

There is a James Walker born 1832 on 1841 census living St George area, Manchester
HO107 575 15

Living with him is a sister?  Emma Walker age 6
Half sister?  Hannah MOSLEY age 9 months
Head  William Mosley
Wife Mary Mosley.

IGI has William Mosley marrying Mary Pearson OR Walker.  I think she is John's widow and Pearson was her maiden name.

As I cannot find Mary Pearson marrying John Walker, and I cannot get birth certs for either of the children, and even if I manage to see her marriage record to William, it will not say that John was her first husband.

Coincidentally, when James marries, some of his children are called Hannah, Emma, John,  Elizabeth, Samuel and Sarah.

William & Mary go on to have Elizabeth, Samuel & Sarah.  Which, with Hannah and Emma make nearly the full family  Shocked

I just wish there was some way I could prove it. Cry

By the way are you sure he was an Clog maker and not an Organ maker? I see a John and Geoge Walker in Hulme St Geoege area. (4 Crown street in 1849. They were Organ Builders also a George Walker at 66 Worcester street who was an Organ builder.
