St Mary's church, (The parish church)Sculcoates 1858
« on: Sunday 11 May 08 01:43 BST (UK) »

Hi
I was wondering if anyone could let me know if there are any films for the above parish.  I need to find
a marriage for Henry BUCKLER (Y) to Elizabeth Johnson in 1858.  I have their certificate but need to
verify that the name Buckler is the actual name in the register from the film if there was one done.
I am wondering if there was a clerical error regarding Henry as I cannot find another marriage to this
couple and his name is Buckley.  Hence why I would like to know the whereabout if any regarding the
film for the original entry.
Thanks for any help with this.
Regards
Gwen

HI Dave
Thankyou for that.  I have their marriage certificate and it states Buckler.  However I would like ot read the original
film to see if there was a clerk error in his name.
Appreciate your email

St Mary's Sculcoates comes under All Saint's Sculcoates, the parochial rights were transferred there in 1869.
The original register is at Beverley Treasure House and looks like the LDS only have films for BT's but marriages end at 1837.

I looked at the fiche of the marriage register for All Saints, Sculcoates at the East Yorkshire Record Office this morning.

I'm still not sure if the name's Buckler or Buckley. I can see how it would be transcribed as Buckler - the hand writing is very idiosyncratic. Henry didn't sign (made his mark) but Buckler had definetly been printed in that space - with 'X his mark' added. However, when I saw the 'y' in 'Mary' - one of the witnesses - it was exactly the same as the end of 'Henry' at the top of the entry.

Anyway, here's the full entry:

Dec 7 1858
Henry Buckler/y 23 bach waterman. Residence: Wincolmlee; father: James, waterman.
Elizabeth Johnson 24 spin  Wincolmlee. Father: Robert, weaver.
Banns. Both made their marks.
Witnesses: Robert Johnson X, Mary Ann Wood X.

Hope that's of some help.

I am sorry it has taken me so long to reply.  Thank you so much for the time you have taken with this.  I have been working all hours and only now answering my emails.

I can see from your details that Buckler/y could be either? and it could be my guy.  The only tbing that surprises me is Robert Johnson/weaver Elizabeth's father was meant to be stone quarryman/Labourer.  This is a little confusing but I can only use this information and hope it is my guy.
Thanks heaps again for taking the time to do that for me.  You are awesome
