You'd have thought that these would have been easy names to find on the census returns and/or records, but there are soooo many variations on the spelling of SHALLIS it's NOT funny !!!
Both were the Fathers, and both were called John.
My 4xG Grandfather was WILLIAM STONE. His Father, JOHN, was a Butcher.
William married ElIZA SHALLIS and her father was JOHN SHALLIS, Cordwainer.
Eliza and William were living in West Street, St Mary Steps when they married in 1843.
William was born c:1805 in Cadleigh. When he married Eliza, he was already Widowed, and was shown as a Yeoman.
My problem is now trying to find Williams first Wife, and any children they may or may not have had .... and I can not find these 2 Fathers on any of the census returns ....
To add to the confusion ... Eliza was illiterate, ad onthe birth of her Daughter, her maiden name is spelt SHALLICE ....
Any help would be much appreciated ...... stuck here and can't move !!!!
Apologies if you have all this! Family Search has a baptism for William Stone 1805 Cadleigh - parents John and Mary Stone. Was he definitely born Cadleigh? Census says Cheriton Fitz?
Also a baptism for Eliza Challice 1822 Cheriton Fitzpaine - parents John and Sarah.
1841 has several Shallis in Cheriton Fitzpaine but sadly no John or Sarah of the right age.
Williams Place of Birth changes over the census years, but we believe Cadleigh to be correct, as there is also a Jane Stone, born around the same time, and on one of the later census years one of William's children is staying with her. (if that makes sense) .. there is also another Brother, Henry, again one of Williams children is with him on th census returns. William's POB is shown (mis-spelt) as Cadbeigh on one return ....
I am stuck now though .. I can't find either set of Parents on the 1841 or 1851 census (although they maybe dead by the 1851) ... there isn't enough information on the 1841 for me to be able to confirm if I have the right ones and none of the occupations match (I would have thought a butcher would have stayed a Butcher and not changed to an Ag Lab for example)
