Freebdm has an Alice Coombes registered Dec Qtr 1869 Newington 1d 233. Do you definitely know she belongs to George, or is it her listing on the 1871 census that determines this? I wondered about the sister Mary Anne who appears aged 5 in 1861 - whether it might be her daughter?

There is a marriage Mar Qtr 1863 George Coombes Croyden 2a 193

I can't easily  find him in 1871 - could he have emigrated?

Is this the Alice Coombes who married George Raggett in 1888? She consistently gives her birthplace as Hambledon. 1891 and 1901 censuses with husband George in Chiddingfold and Godalming and in 1871 with her grandparents William and Sarah Coombes in Chiddingfold. Her age is also consistent 1, 21, and 29
On the 1881 census William and Sarah are in Godalming. Lodging with them is Alice Mary Jelley aged 10 born Hambledon.

Births Sep 1869
JELLEY  Alice Mary     Hambledon  2a 119

She also seems to have had a father called George

ALICE MARY JELLY
Christening:  29 JUL 1869   Hambledon, Surrey
Father:  GEORGE JELLY
Mother:  ANN

There is no Alice Jelley born Hambledon on the 1871 census.
Have you investigate this coincidence to see whether Alice Jelley could be Alice Coombes? For instance Illegitimate people when they married usually covered up their illegitimacy if they could. They often gave their father's name as the same as their own and gave a first name either of their actual father or a male within the family whose occupation they also might have 'borrowed'. Consequently it is never reliable to take the information from a marriage certificate at face value. You always need other records to collaborate the information given on a marriage certificate. When that can't be found you need to question whether it is because it is not correct.

The IGI gives one sibling for Alice Mary Jell(e)y

FREDERICK JELLY
Christening:  11 MAR 1866   Hambledon, Surrey
Father:  GEORGE JELLY
Mother:  ANN

Frederick appears on the 1871 census in Hambledon

RG10 823 folio 12
Hambledon Common
George Jelley 30 Head Widower Sawyer Godalming Surrey
Mary Ann Coombes 15  Sawyer's Sister Godalming Surrey
Frederic Jelley 4  Son Hambledon Surrey
plus 1 boarder

On the 1861 census George Coombs was with his parents William and Sarah in Chiddingfold. He was aged 20 and born Godalming. Also in the household was his sister Mary Ann Coombs aged 5 born Godalming.

George's father married Sarah Jelley in 1850

William Coombes
Sarah Jelley
Marriage:  19 OCT 1850   Godalming, Surrey

George was born illegitmately.

GEORGE COMBES  JELLY
Christening:  24 AUG 1840   Chiddingfold, Surrey
Mother:  SARAH JELLY

Death registration of George Jellys wife

Deaths Sep 1869
Jelley  Ann  25  Hambledon  2a 63

In 1881 Frederick Jelley, Alice's brother was a servant

RG11 835 folio 67
Church Street Kingston On Thames, Surrey
Frederick Jelly  15  Hambledon, Surrey, Servant Butcher's assistant

Not sure where George was. He 'reappears' in Hambledon in 1891

Mary Ann Lickfold Head 72 Widow Farmer Chiddingfold Surrey
George Jelly 51 Nephew Widower Sawyer Godalming Surrey

MARY ANN COOMBS
JOHN LICKFOLD
Marriage:  03 FEB 1839   Hambledon, Surrey

Births Mar 1866
JELLEY  Frederick    Hambledon  2a 110

A possible marriage for George

Marriages Jun 1865
Jelley  George     Guildford  2a 92
a possible spouse
Parsons  Ann     Guildford  2a 92

Either of the children's birth certificates would confirm their mother's maiden name.

Hi Valda.
I think you have the right family,
I never though about looking for George under his mother maiden name, i have come across this so many time's in my searches (i must be getting brain dead).
You have put another spanner in the work so to speak about George being Alice's father or Mary Ann being her mother, but almost sure it George we will see.
Im going to send for her birth certificate first before going any further with her.
many thanks for your time.
Regards jan

After reading Valda's post - neither did I  Smiley - and I guess like you I see so many folks using their partner's name on the census but forget to check for the marriage. It's interesting to wonder about why they decide to revert to their original name.

I think Ann possibly Ann nee Parsons was Alice (Mary) Jelley/Coombes mother . The two Mary Ann's are George's younger sister and his paternal aunt Mary Ann Lickford nee Coombes.
