Hi

I have been trying to find the birth and parents of my great grandfather James Henry Clayton as per the attached link on the Middlesex board, but my search has bought me to Surrey.

From the Surrey History Centre I have received the baptism from Mortlake Parish for my grandfather

Page 18 of Baptisms solemnized in the Parish of Mortlake
in the Country of Surrey in the year 1854

When Baptised - #142  1854 June 25th
Child's Christian Name - James Henry Clayton
Parent's Name - Catherine Elizabeth Thomas - no father
Abode - London
In margin looks like - b. Sep 26th 1851  - which could be date of birth

From this it looks like his full name is James Henry Clayton Thomas, arriving in New Zealand approx early 1870's he has dropped the Thomas and is known as James Henry Clayton. 

Can any one advise me or help me with bastardy records to try to locate my grandfather or his father in England.

Hi Christine,
It all depends where James Henry was born.  The baptism in Mortlake doesn't necessarily mean he was born there, more so as it states they were living in London  Sad  I checked FreeBMD to see if his birth was registered & also the full GRO indexes for Q3 &Q4 1851 but no James Henry Clayton Thomas.  Also looked on the 1861 census to see if I could spot mother & son, again no luck.  However I did spot on the IGI the birth & baptism of a Catherine Elizabeth Thomas d/o Thomas & Mary Ann.  Born 29/4/1829 baptised 9/8/1829, Southwark, Surrey (could be something could be nothing)  I found what could be this same Catherine on the 1851 census.
St. George Southwark  HO107/1564/207/29

Elizabeth Terrett wid  77  no occupation b. Middlesex
Catherine Thomas  g/dau  unm  22  Upholsterer  b. St. George Surrey.

I would say that the name Clayton included in Jame's name might have something to do with the fathers surname.

Thanks for your help, I should have included a bit more information.

Have found Katherine Elizabeth Thomas's parents are Samuel and Sarah Thomas, born 17 August 1827 Brixton Surrey,  have found her on the 1851 census to 1901, death was 14 Feb 1915.  On her death certificate she is listed as the wife of James Clayton, but do not think she ever married him.
On certificates here in New Zealand James Henry Clayton was born 1851 Harrow on the Hill, Middlesex, which with his mother being unmarried I don't think he was registered.
