Advice please re marriage at Arley
« on: Sunday 11 May 08 13:04 BST (UK) »

I would like to some help re a marriage bond I have had passed to me from my father of an ancestor of the planned marriage of William Keyt to Anne Phillips both of age (so no real clue to a date of birth)  The marriage was by licence. Does this mean if no banns were read, they were both not parishioners.  The bond confirms that William Keyt was living in Arley parish for 4 weeks.  Also at the marriage a witness to the marriage is Valencia  do not know if this was Viscount or Viscountess.  Would this have been usual for the Lord of the Manor to be present as a witness .  Latterly their two subsequent children christened at Arley Church were Arthur and Lucy  both names of the Viscount and Viscountess.  Then the trail goes quiet until they reappear in london in 1785 as Tallow Chandlers.

Hopefully somebody could advise me about where to go from here.  Would like to find out who was William Keyt(e) and Ann(e) Phillips

Hi Gwendloine,
Marriage by licence had the following advantages:
No banns - more private.
No need to wait 3 weeks or more. Marriage can take place almost immediately after licence is issued.
If the couple lived in different places, the cost of the licence was virtually the same as paying for 2 sets of banns and a certificate.
Social status.

As far as the Lord of the Manor being present I'm not sure what the significance of that was - maybe they were esteemed estate workers,
The only other thing that comes to mind is something my sister told me last year about the deeds of her daughter's house , in Falmouth. Shocked
see wikipedia:
Droit de Seignour
Should make you smile! And this is on the deeds today!
Good luck - hope you find the information you need.

Gwendoline,
Just been having a look for information on Upper Arley on genuki:
www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/STS/UpperArley/index.html
Note that originally it came under Staffordshire, so you could start looking on www.familysearch.org for a birth for William in Worcestershire, and Staffordshire - this might give a starting point.
It is possible that the lord of the manor had an estate elsewhere, and workers might have moved from the place where that estate was to work on the Upper Arley estate.
Juat a few thoughts - hope they help.
Kind regards,
