Tried at Birkenhead - jailed where?
« on: Sunday 11 May 08 18:56 BST (UK) »

From a newspaper I discovered that in June 1883 at Birkenhead Quarter sessions an ancestor was sentenced to 6 months with hard labour. Can anyone suggest where he would have served his sentence?

As Birkenhead was in the County of Cheshire it could be Chester Castle Prison, or possibly Walton Gaol Liverpool.

Thank you both.

Yes, I have tried Black Sheep ancestors but didn't find him there.

I shall try to follow up your suggestions, Stan.

Then, as now, convicts could serve their sentences anywhere. One of my lot from the Lancaster area appears in the 1891 census at HM Prison Borstal, in Kent.

Must find out what he did!

Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD  everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.
