Gullett Willie marriage South Australia c1850-1852
« on: Monday 12 May 08 07:10 BST (UK) »

I am hoping somekind person may be able to find a marriage for William Willie mariner and Sarah Gullett in South Australia ain the early 1850's.

Sarah's parents were Thomas Gullett and Elizabeth Edgcombe, she was born in Plymouth. William's parents were Joseph Willie and Sarah Shace he was born in Yorkshire.

Williams' death certificate in Viotoria in 1888  age 66, said he had married in Adelaide aged 29 ie c 1822+29= 1851. (certificate held)

To confuse us all he and Sarah also married again in Victoria in 1863!!! certificate held)

They had one child Lucinda Elizabeth or ELizabeth Lucinda  b c 1855 place of birth on her marriage certificate given as Adelaide. ( certificate held)

Hi Robyn,

I have had no luck finding a marriage for Sarah in SA but found this birth with the mother Sarah Gullett.

Surname-WELTERN
Names- Elizabett Lucinda
Date- 1853-08-11
Father-George WELTERN
Mother-Sarah GULLETT
Birth Place/Residence- Adelaide
District Code- Ade
Book- 4 Page/ 196

I am not sure that it is of any help as it possibly raises more questions than it answers.

Thankyou both for your time

The Sarah  Edgcombe Gullett and Thomas Dunn family is another Line. Sarah Edgcome Gullet's father Thomas was borther of the other Sarah Gullett.

I am sure that the birth for Elizabett Lucinda Weltern would be correct, the two forenames are spot on. She would definitely have been Sarah's child.

Is there a Sarah Weltern /William Willie marriage?? or a Gullett/Weltern marriage?

We have had many years trying to sort out where Sarah Willie daughter of William and Sarah Gullett came from. In the Victorian 1863 certificate she is listed as a spinster!!!!

regards

Hi Robyn,

Sorry I have not found any Sarah Gullett/Welton/ Willie marriages 1842-1916.

I also searched with just the brides father name being GUL*T and only came up with one marriage in 1912 for a Beatrice Gullettt - father John.

Looks like Sarah didn't marry George Welton  in SA so maybe she was a spinster when marrying William Willie in Vic.  Undecided

It has been a long story.

The Gulletts are well researched with branches going to USA, Canada, South Africa and Australia.

Several families came to Australia.
Children of  Thomas Gullett 1802 and Elizabeth Edgcomb

Thomas George Edgcombe Gullett  1826 and his wife Ann Corkill father of Sarah Edgcomb Gullett who married Thomas Dunn.
and
Sarah Gullett b 1835 (mWelton/Willie)

Children of Thomas Gullett and Agnes Pearse:(also parents of Thomas Gullett  1802)

Edmund Gullett 1808 & Ann Wannell
Henry Gullett b 1810 and his wife Isabella Keats and their family including son Henry Gullett b 1837 who married Elizabett Lucinda Willie, a cousin.

On her 1863 Victorian marriage certificate to William Willie aged 35 Sarah Gullett b 1835 gives her parents and Thomas Gullett and Elizabeth Edgombe. Age given as 29

On William Willie's 1888 Victorian death certificate his wife is listed as Sarah Gullett married aged 29 in Adelaide . Child Lucinda aged 33.

On Elizabett Lucinda Willie's 1872 Victorian  marriage certificate to Henry Gullett her parents are given as William Willie and Sarah Gullett. age given was 19. est Dob 1851/1853. This agrees with the Weltern registration.

I have not been able to find Sarah Gullett/Willie/Weltern death in either Victoria or NSW.

I have documentary evidence of her living in the Romsey/ Lancefield are in Victoria in 1896. After that I have no further trace of her.

Now you have all the details.

regards

thanks  very  much for that detailed analysis, how very  unfortunate  to  have Lucinda Willie  marry  another Gullett, thus confusing  the  issue further.

I  guess the  same thoughts  no  doubt have entered  you  mind  that  they were never married  in  South Australia  and  that William  Willie  "adopted" for want of a better word  Elizabeth Lucinda as  his  own  child and  to save  any  embarrassment told  a  little fib on  their marriage  certifcate.

Yes,

i had thought of that.
It would be nice toknow who George Weltern was.

Perhaps I will look at marraiges in Plymouth before her arrival in Australia as my next move.

I should also check out deaths for a George Whelton in SA Vic and NSW.

No death for George Weltern (or reasonable variations of the surname) up to 1915 in SA.

Hi Robyn

I had another look this morning and have a Correction
There is a death for a George Western (is that a reasonable variation?)
19/7/1892 aged 76

Unfortunately there is no information on status of marriage or relative.
So there is little to identify him.
He died in Adelaide
ADE
Symbol S
Book203
page 421

I have checked the  marriages for him and can't find any.
The only George Western marriage is in 1889 but he is aged 23.
Like wise, the only births are for the marriage above with children born until 1897.

There is no reference to the name WELTERN for any birth (except Elisabett Lucinda), marriage or death in SA.

It is possible it was recorded wrongly or perhaps conveniently.

I agree with Jenn's posting as the best explanation.
Sorry not to have found any certain answers for you.

Thankyou Robyn for your time.

I agree that Western is a good spelling variant.

I am interested in this as Lucinda/Elizabett became a figure in Australian history when she married Henry Gullett. (His sister is my direct ancestor)

Henry and Lucinda had only daughters one of whom became Doctor Lucy Edith Gullett (1876-1949) She is mentioned in the Austrlian Dictionary of Biography. www.adb.online.anu.edu.au

Hi Robyn,

I can understand why you are so interested in Elisabett as her daughters are fascinating.

It crossed my mind that if Sarah was a single mother in those days she must have had very good family support.

I will be going to the SAGHS library next month where the fiche  of all publicly available BMD records for SA are held. I can view the fiche on the birth of Elizabett and see if anything extra can be gleaned. At least it will show the handwriting for WELTERN.

Do you know when Sarah Gullet arrived in SA?
The only Sarah Gullett I found on a shipping list arrived in 1852  aged
20 a house & nurseymaid from Cheshire
http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/australia/epaminondas1852.htm (look under single woman)

I live in the country so don't get to access the library in Adelaide very often but will get back to you after my visit.

Robyn,,
Thank you for your interest in this.

Sarah was b c 1835 in Plymouth Devon which is where her parents married.

Gullett has been transcribed in may different ways GULLEN/GULLEY/GULLET/GUILLET etc etc.

Her brother Thomas migrated in 1854, Henry Gullett and his family in 1852

One of Henry and Lucinda Gullet's  nephews, Sydney Alfred George Gullett, named his son Sydney WOLTAN Gullett in 1896. Woltan has been used subsequently

I will purchase Lucinda's NSW death certificate and see what information it may add.

regards

Robyn
