Hi - I wonder if someone can point me in the direction of where I might find old maps of Dodworth, say from 1750 onward?  Jackie

If your local you could try the main library in Barnsley. I've just googled old maps of Doworth and its come up with 2 (Francis Frith) Where abouts are you looking for because i live in Dodworth.

Hi Carolanne, Sorry no I am not local.  I have visited Dodworth once - last year, and when we got there we had no idea where to look or where to go, just felt a bit 'lost'.  So we decided to abandon the visit at that time - go back and do some research and visit again later.  Up till that trip and a subsequent one to Wakefield Records Office I had thought that the famlies were living in Silkstone, but now kow they were actually in Dodworth.

Basically I am looking for a map of Dodworth 1750 - 1850 to compare what was there then against what is there now, and try to find what has survived.

My WINTER & SHAW families lived there, mostly weavers, but the brances of the family i am connected mostly too had left for Darfield and later Linthwaite and Golcar by the time the census came in in 1841.  Jackie

Jackie, You need to bear in mind that Dodworth did not become a separate parish until 1847.  Before that it was (I think) in the parish of Silkstone.  Of course that makes no difference to maps but it does mean that prior to 1847 your Dodworth ancestors would probably have been baptised, married and buried at Silkstone.  Sam.

Hi Jackie

If you have not already found it yourself.....

If you access the same old maps site link that I gave you when we were looking for Scar Wood but use coordinates 431200 and 404900 this time you should see Dodworth on the 1855 and 1894 Yorkshire maps.

Hi DS - Many thanks again - I have now found I can access Old Maps through Internet Explorer, and found the Dodworth maps.  You have been a really great help!  Jackie

Hi Sam - thank you for that.  I did actually know about Silkstone being the mother church till 1847, and have been there.  I had no problem with Silkstone and at that time thought the families came from there with no evidence otherwise.  Then I bought the Silkstone Parish Records CD and found that they all lived in Dodworth.  Many thanks for pointing it out though.  I also now have the Darfield and Cawthorne Parish Register CDs as well so if anyone needs a look up - just ask.  Jackie
