Hi, One of my relatives, Jane Beresford, arrived in South Australia as a child on the brig 'Emma' in 1836. She travelled with her parents, and her father's initials were W.F. In one of the passenger lists, the family's surname is listed as Burford/Brisford/Beresford, and may also have been spelt Berrisford. I was wondering if anyone had some information about Jane Beresford and her family. She was also known as 'Jenny' and worked as a midwife. She married William Henry Bourne in South Australia. Any details about her or her marriage etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Anise.

Hi Anise
The only marriage I can see that matches your information at all is this one, however the dates and ages rule out this bride arriving in 1836.

Hello there going on the marriage information there is this birth that ties in with Jane's given age
Jane BERRESFORD born 30/9/1857 at Adelaide to William Berresford and Sarah Fowler Book 11 page 161
now William and Sarah had 10 children from 1848 to 1866 in South Australia but I cannot see a marriage in South Australia for them
regards Jenn

Hi all, Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. The marriage details Robyn has provided look right, although I have always been told that Jane arrived on the Emma. Maybe I will need to rethink this! I don't have Jane's birth date but I do know she married William Henry Bourne, the son of James Bourne, so the marriage and birth details you have all provided do seem to suggest that she didn't arrive on the Emma after all - maybe it was just her parents and a sibling? Thanks again!

Hello there Cando
http://www.familyhistorysa.info/shipping/passengerlists.html
FOWLER Sarah (Norman) arrived 1846-07-31 on Canton from London 1846-04-27 via Plymouth [Source:4,6,20(W BERRESFORD)]
It is all bit puzzling isn't it?
Ansie family legend/lore says the family arrived on the Emma. I cannot find a marriage in SA for Sarah Fowler and William Berresford or any variation of the spelling but that doesn't mean they were not married there though.
I do wonder if Mrs B died and W F remarried? ro Sarah Fowler?
oh bit of a muddle
regards JEnn

Hmm, It looks like the consensus is that my Jane was born in 1857 to William Beresford/Berresford and Sarah Fowler/Taylor, and that Sarah arrived in SA independently of William and they married in Adelaide. This doesn't fit well with family legend...but I have more information that I started with! And more questions!

Hi All, now, there is no doubt at all that the SUBMITTER to IGI has taken his/her information from the same source as Jenn's last posting uses.
Just because Jenn has found Taylor as the same name that the SUBMITTER has posted ,does not mean the SUBMITTER' s linking of facts is correct. Could be different family. Could be, as often happens, a merging and cross over of generations. Sometimes I think IGI submitters wish it to be correct and the innaccuracies quickly begin.

I always treat submitted entries on IGI with caution....have found so many errors.
My two bob's worth - two different families. I wonder if the original shipping list at the SA State Library may have any more info or perhaps a research enquiry to http://www.saghs.org.au/ships/shipsE.htm 36/06 Emma 5 Oct 1836 Nepean Bay London
Request form on website.
Cheers cando
