To start with there are over 200 records on IGI (www.familysearch.org) for Farish in Dumfries, including a birth for Janet Farish in 1859, daughter of Edward Farish and Hannah Tait. After checking through all those entries you could try looking up details on Scotland's People website to get certificates.

Hi ACDing

Welcome to RootsChat  Smiley

Although Edward and Hannah had a child Janet in 1859, they don't look to have married until 1872. There is an entry showing for their marriage on IGI (at family search www.familysearch.org) on 26 JAN 1872 Annan, Dumfries (certificate available to view at pay to view Scotlands People www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk). The marriage cert will include their parents' names including mothers' maiden names.

This looks to be their 1861 census entry, by look of it, Hannah with children from previous marriage/relationships:

Edward Farrish    39, Laberour & Tisherman (?spl), b. Annan
Hannah Farrish    40, b. Cummertrees, Dumfrieshire
Mary Beattie    15, step-daughter, b. Cummertrees, Dumfrieshire
Robert Beattie    12, step-son, b. Cummertrees, Dumfrieshire
George Beattie    10, step-son, b. Cummertrees, Dumfrieshire
James Beattie    8, step-son, b. Cummertrees, Dumfrieshire
Margert Richardon 4, step-daughter, b. Cummertrees, Dumfrieshire
Janet Farrish    1, daughter, b. Annan

Address: Hairs Den High St, Annan, Dumfries

If you haven't researched before in Scotland, there are two useful guides here on Rootschat:

There is a Hannah Tait at home in Cummertrees with parents James and Catherine (big family!) in the 1841 census - likely it is the correct Hannah (but you can confirm this with parents names). You can see the entry on freecen (just make sure you click on the 1841 tab at the top) http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

We have been researching Alexander Farish born 1803 in Annan who married Isabella Rule in 1828 and have identified these children -
Mary James, Christina, William (died young), Georgina Douglas and Margaret
We have not found an Edward, nor have we established Alexander's parentage but his father could be John.
Alexander died in 1843, aged 39, and Isabella in 1851

Hope this is helpful
