WALKER/BICKERDIKE/ACKROYD/LANGDALE families
« on: Monday 12 May 08 14:21 BST (UK) »

Hi,

Is there anyone out there that can assist me with a bit of research.  I'm filling out a circular family tree chart for my Mother's side that goes back 5 generations (from Genes Reunited website) and seem to have hit a brick wall.  I'm on the last generation (my 3xGt Grandparents) and would be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction.  I have the following gaps -

BICKERDIKE - I am looking for a marriage for my 3xGt Grandfather JOHN BICKERDIKE.  The only info I have on him is that he was born in Leeds in 1811 and he married Catherine ?  She was born in 1816.  Their son Matthew (my 2xGt Grandfather) was born in 1834. Matthew had a brother called John and they resided at Joy Cottage, York Road, Leeds.

ACKROYD - I am looking for a marriage for my 3xGt Grandfather WILLIAM ACKROYD.  All I have on him is that he was born in 1801.  According to the Census of 1841 he was an agricultural labourer and lived at Myrth (or Myrtle) Bank, Handsworth, Sheffield.  He had 3 daughters, Ellen (b 1833), Anne (b 1834) and Eliza (my 2xGt Grandmother b 1836).  The census does not mention a wife but lists a JANE BRIDLINGTON (female servant) aged 20 so I presumed his wife was deceased and he employed Jane to look after the children.  But then I became a bit confused as I've found somewhere (don't know where) mention of a wife, Sarah (born 1802), so any help on sorting that one out would be much appreciated.
LANGDALE - Am looking for a marriage for my 3xGt Grandfather WILLIAM.  I think he would have been born early 1800's.  His wife's name was ELIZABETH.  Don't know her maiden name, can anyone suggest how I find out? I think William was a boot maker.  They had a son GEORGE (b 1834) who married a FRANCES BEECROFT circa 1856.
BEECROFT - Last but not least WILLIAM LANGDALE's son George.  Can  anyone tell me how do I go about finding out who his wife FRANCES'S parents were?

Well, I know it's an awful lot to ask, but hopefully some kind soul out there will be able to set me on the right track and this will complete my research (I hope).

Hi Willow,

Thanks a lot for your lightning response.  This looks very much as though it is my John Bickerdike as the dates are only a year out from the dates I had for them.  I can't believe how helpful people have been on this forum, I only found it on Saturday evening, but already I have had 2 gaps in my chart filled in.

Thank you so very much once again and I think I will have to look at this IGI (I had never heard of it until today!!).

Kind regards

Hiya Busybod

The link is http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true

Its not complete but you can often drop lucky

When a census is taken they ask for your age last birthday thats why Matthew was listed as aged 7 in 1841 which would make 1833 the correct year

Good hunting!

(also hate to tell you geneology is very addictive so you will never be finished  Grin)

Hi again, Willow.

Thanks for that snippet of info, as I say until yesterday I'd never heard of the IGI.  I know what you mean though about it being addictive.  I've been doing it for 9 months now and it's almost taken over my life - I spend at least 2/3 hours each day on the computer and am attending a half day's Workshop at the Central Library in Leeds on Wednesday.

I think I'll click onto the IGI site now.  Thanks once again and good luck to you in your research.

Hi Willow,

Sorry to bother you again so soon, but can you help me.  I've been on the IGI searching for my 3xGt Grandfather's marriage (WILLIAM ACKROYD b 1801) to Sarah?, but I've found at least 3, none of which seem to fit.  He was born in Sheffield and these marriages were in either Bradford or Halifax.  They all fit in that the spouse's name was Sarah.  I suppose it's possible it could be one of these, but how do I know, if it's not a stupid question.  What I've done is taken his year of birth (1801) and added on 21 years and used that as a rough guide.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Ta.

Hiya Busybot

Unfortunately the list isn't complete so they may not be the right ones

Sarah is listed with William on the 1851 census so really you are going to need her death certificate to confirm her maiden name

I think this is her - death of Sarah Ackroyd aged 74 June quarter 1876 Hunslet ref 9b 229

Hiya Busybod

I think Sarah might be a second wife as there is a baptism on the IGI for Eliza 28.8.1836 at Handsworth - parents William and Mary

Hi Willow,

Thanks once again for your prompt response, I must admit I don't know what I'd have done without you!, but it's all getting a bit complicated now.  I've thought about it long and hard and I'm beginning to wonder whether the William and Sarah you mention in the 1851 census are indeed mine as it lists William as a Cordwainer and according to the 1841 census he was an agricultural labourer.  Also the 1851 census lists him as being born in Halifax and I understood that he was from Handsworth, Sheffield. Also the dates of birth are about 4 years out. According to the 1851 census he was 46 years old, which would make his dob 1805.  I've got his dob as 1801.

The interesting point is it does list him as having two 16 yr old daughters (are they twins do you think?), one named Mary - if your theory is right I suppose this could be after the first wife.  But there is no mention of Eliza (who in 1851 would have been 15) or  Anne and Ellen.  So, I'm confused to say the least.  What do you think?

Hiya Busybod

I was looking at the following

at Thorpe Hall Farm Newsam Yorkshire

William Ackroyd 50 head M b Headlington Yorkshire ag lab
Sarah Ackroyd 49 wife M b Handsworth Yorkshire
Eliza Ackroyd 15 dau b Handsworth Yorkshire
joseph Blakeley 23 U b Newton Yorkshire farm servant
James Soarry 49 U b Scotland ag lab

HO107/2316 Folio 226 Page 3

This is a very useful site for searching the IGI but it is out of date http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm#PageTitle

Elizas was the only Ackroyd that came up under Handsworth

Hiya Busybod

Theres a marriage Sept 1843 Sheffield ref 22 375 (Sheffield covers Handsworth)

William Ackroyd and on the same page Sarah Mitchell

This might be the second marriage but unfortunately doesnt help with the maiden name of Williams first wife Mary

But saying that this might be Marys death

Dec 1839 Sheffield ref XXII 7 (image is very faded)

Hi Willow,

Seems like once again I am in your debt.  I think the one at Thorpe Hall Farm looks like the right one.  It lists William as being born at Headlington, I've no idea where that is, but the rest of it would seem to fit, although there is still no mention of the other 2 daughters, Ellen and Anne.  But thanks once again, you've been a great help, I couldn't have managed without you.  I'll keep looking.

Hiya Busybod

Glad to help

Ellen and Ann might have married by 1851 as they would be in their late teens so that might be why we canot find them

I will keep my eyes open

Hiya Busybod

I think I have found Ellen in 1841

Bramley Hall Handsworth

Elizabeth Weldon 77 head W b Sheffield Landed Proprietress
Harriet Hancock servant 34 U b Whitwell Derbyshire
Ellen Ackroyd servant 18 U b Sprodbro, Yorkshire Housemaid
John Fisher servant 57 M b handsworth gardener

HO107/2342 Folio 596 Page 1

On Ancestry it is transcribed as Achrod but its not suprising as the writing for Ellens entry is terrible
