Any advice for a newbie
« on: Monday 12 May 08 17:27 BST (UK) »

Hi

I have recently embarked on a journey of tracing back my paternal line, the Stevensons, with, up until now, relative ease and success. I have traced the direct line back to the birth of a William Stevenson, in Bradfield, Essex, around 1815 (1851 census puts his age at 36).

1815 obviously being out of range of General Registration, I went, armed with plastic folders, paper and a pencil, to the Essex Records Office, to see if I could trace his baptism.

I knew from the census returns that by 1841, he was in the East End of London, where he remained up until his last census entry in 1891. But I was hoping that his baptism would have been recorded in Bradfield, enabling me to gain some insight into his parents and hopefully enable me to carry on delving back into time.

However, having searched the parish register from about 1810 onwards, i can find no record of the event. There were a couple of other Stevensons baptised a couple of years either side, which would lead me possibly to summise as to his parenthood, but nothing concrete on William.

I know how easy, but ultimately, how foolhardy it can be to make any assumptions at all when researching family history, but, after also checking the parishes immediately around Bradfield just in case, I seem to have run out of hard evidence.

To make it worse, there seem to be two couples baptising their children around this time in Bradfield, with the Stevenson name - a Thomas and Elizabeth and a John and Elizabeth.

Does anyone have any advice for me at this point? Would there be any point for me to visit the only CofE church in Bradfield, St Lawrences? Does the answer lie elsewhere in the ERO?

He must have been baptised somewhere as he married in St Lawrence Church, Old Jewry, London.

Thanks for your help!

Hello and a warm welcome to Rootschat Smiley

A good proportion of my lot (none of them Stevensons) from that sort of area were non-conformists, and seem particularly to have attended, and had children baptised at, the Wesleyan Methodist chapel in Manningtree. Have you had a look at any non-conformist records?  Many are now available (albeit rather expensively) online at www.bmdregisters.co.uk.

Hope you find your William somewhere!

Hi

Welcome to Rootschat Cheesy

You could try finding out as much as possible about the two possible sets of parents - are they on any census? when did they died? names of known children? did they leave wills? follow them back. Anything and everything.

Track possible siblings - who did they marry? find them on censuses?

Look for the witnesses at William's marriage.

Look at the names of William's children - any pointers?

Any relatives staying with William or any of his children on any census? Follow them up.

All this may not lead you to the proof you need but will help build a better picture of the family.  And then when you aren't actively seeking something may pop up Grin

Good luck

Family History is our Legacy to future Generations

Welcome to all 'New Members on Rootschat'

Its about two years ago when I first joined the site.  I can not say 'Thank You' enough times to those members who helped me with data.

I am forever in their debt, and hope that my sincere offer of lifetime friendship, with each one, is enough to say I truly appreciated all the links, and information they passed on.

If I had one bit of advice for Newbies today, it would be to say; 'Never give up Researching'. if like yours-truly, your research slows down or stops for a while.
Then change direction, in my case I went searching for archive information on the Industry that my g,g,grandparents had worked.
Mining, Shipbuilding, Farming info, can all be found via a click onto the web.  I also went in search of towns, buildings, both in Ireland and England, around 1840s - 1950s, that the families lived and worked.
Yes I still 'Happy Cry' when I find another bit of the jigsaw.

Any information you gather to add to your 'Family Tree' is adding to your legacy, for future generations.
The journey is a long one, and its hard work, but with good people like those on Rootschat, giving you a little help now and then, your journey will be more smiles than tears.

((hugs)) and blessings to all researchers on site.Summers
