The Time Machine
« on: Monday 12 May 08 18:04 BST (UK) »

I don't know what his name is, but he's very mischievous and I wish he'd stop it. I assume he's a descendant of mine, maybe really famous, wants to make his true ancestry impossible to find because he's concocted a self-image that doesn't gel with the humbleness of the real thing. So he's built a time machine to find out when someone would be busy researching his lineage.....finds me. He finds the parishes I'm looking in, then goes back and makes quite sure that either:
The records got destroyed in a flood, OR
The records office burned down, OR
A rat widdled on them.....OR
The transcription was done by a blind Bengali, OR
The whole family were hiding in a tree on census night, OR
A crucial family member contracted a disfiguring disease causing him to travel from parish to parish, making him untraceable, OR
...he got put in jail the day before the census, OR.......................

And at the VERY least......
The LDS website has every other parish in the county extracted except that one, OR
Free Reg can't find anyone willing to do it because the Parish Clerk's handwriting looked like a spider on shrooms.

Just venting.

Now that's the trouble with this hobby Betty, it's hopelessly addictive!

Someone should put warnings over every FH database saying "if you take one bite of this apple you will be terminally addicted for the rest of you life".

I have one of those mischievous rellies as well.  My Gt Grandmother just refuses to be identified.  She doesn't appear on Free BMD records, she's possibly listed on Yorkshire BMD, I can see the possible entry, but on-line ordering of certificates is not available and I'm in Australia!!!

BUT, give up Betty, not on your life, I've declared war and I'll get her one day!!!!

regards,
Jill

I must stand up & admit I'm addicted, I couldn't give this up now anymore than I could give up breathing Grin Grin  Family History really should come with a health warning!!

Your Gt Grandmother is out there somewhere, Jill, you'll find her one day Smiley

Don't give up - I've had a fantastic result today on someone I thought I'd never get any further with and now I have a photo, his obit, his grave site and I hope soon a photo of his grave.

Yes it's often frustrating but days like this make it all worthwhile.  Grin

Oh NEVER give up. Never. (Yes, far too bleeping addictive!). There's always that hope that a box full of records will surface during the restoration of some old building somewhere. If all else fails, I amuse myself researching for other people:)
