Annie,
I remember there was a factory, in Beeston near Nottingham, that had an entrance a little bit like that  - almost like a portcullis + a clock with a siren that used to sound out when it was work time.
Question is was it designed to keep people out, or keep the poor workers in? Huh Grin Undecided
Strange architecture - prestige, I suppose.

fort hartley is right, not somewhere you'd like to get 'jammed' in, sorry.  during the war the whole building was painted in camouflage colours which made it look even more dramatic and imposing.  but hartleys village which was just around the corner from that shot of the factory, was well laid out, quite decent houses with gardens.   hartley was also responsible for building locally, a methodist church and of course the famous aintree institute.  which i think was demolished recently to make way for a shopping complex.
