Cannot find in 1841
« on: Monday 12 May 08 19:19 BST (UK) »

Can anyone help please ?

I am looking to find WILLIAM WOODLAND who according to the 1851 Census was from St Mary,Cambridge his age there is shown as 19 when he is in Chatham Barracks.
I believe his parents might be James and Elizabeth but have yet to confirm that.
I cannot find the family in 1841 though, his partner later was Jane from Manchester but I have yet to trace their marriage.WILLIAM was in the Army and their first two children were born in India or West Indies (William 1866 and Elizabeth 1864) so perhaps they married there but cannot find on "find my past" Military records.
Any help would be much appreciated
Thanks

I think the family are here in 1841, minus William.   Cry

A possible marriage (full records at the British Library)

http://www.bl.uk/collections/oiocfamilyhistory/family.html

 Presidency of Marriage   BENGAL
  Marriage Year   1860
  Husband First Names   William
  Husband Surname   Woodland
  Wife First Names   Jane
  Wife Surname   Johnson
  Prefix   N1
  Source Year   1860
  Volume Number   98
  Folio   360
  LDS Film Reference   499001

Taken from thew FIBIS website

http://www.fibis.org/

A birth certificate of one of the children born in this country would confirm or eliminate this marriage

Births Jun 1870
Woodland  Walter    Salford  8d 126

The marriage details would confirm Jane and William's fathers details.

Thanks a million Suffolk Sue and Valda...you have given me so much to get my teeth into, and pointed me to links I didn't know existed.

I realise yet again just why this site is so good ..it's because of the brilliant people who are only too pleased to give their time and effort.

Mamy many thanks

BIG problem !!

Couldn't understand why WILLIAM wasn't with his widowed mother Elizabeth in 1841, but it seems there are 2 WILLIAM WOODLAND's born St Marys Cambridge in the appropriate timescale.
The 1835 baptism of WILLIAM B (son of James and Elizabeth) sent by Suffolk Sue can't be
"my" William as his death is shown NBI 1835 aged 3 weeks, which obviously explains that.
So where was "my William" who in 1851 is shown as being 19.
Looks very much like the marriage details sent by Valda are right, can you tell me how to get a copy of that marriage certificate please ?
Any further help would be great
Thanks

The Cambs FHS website at http://www.cfhs.org.uk/Search.html which has various indexes including a baptism index 1801-37 only shows one William Woodland, and he's the one who was buried aged 3 weeks - he's also on the burial index on the same site but as Wm B, which a search for William doesn't pick up. So your William wasn't baptised in Cambs, although in later censuses his birthplace is consistently shown as Cambridge.

There was only the one Woodland family living in Cambs in 1841 - the parents of the wrong William, and their other children.

All of the Woodlands in the Burial Index are children of the other family with the exception of a James Woodland aged 37 who was buried in 1835. It might be worth checking out his background, as he's of the right age.

Why should William have been with a widowed mother Elizabeth in 1841? Where has she sprung from?

Hi David,

I had thought that my William was the son of James and Elizabeth(nee Bonnett), who were married in 1825 Newmarket,Cambridge, as you mention James died in 1835 and I thought William would be with his widowed mother Elizabeth, which is why I then looked for a death of William and found it ..William B aged 3 weeks.

So...the first trace of the correct William (Army man) is  in the1851 census which gives his
birth circa 1832, his previous whereabouts seem a complete mystery, he certainly seemed to have thought he was born at St Mary,Cambridge, am at a loss now.
Any suggestions ?
Kind Regards

It is an expensive process to order anything from the British Library via their search services

http://www.bl.uk/collections/oiocfamilyhistory/family.html#search

or you can visit, ask for a look up from anyone visiting, or engage a researcher.  First however I would want to be sure it was the correct marriage and the way to do that is to obtain one of the children's birth certificates to confirm their mother's maiden name.

Have you been able to find William's second marriage details or or indeed his death registration?

1891 census RG12 3243 folio 80
427 Oldham Road Manchester
William Woodland 58 Head Married Timekeeper and army pensioner Cambridge
Rachel Woodland 50 Wife Married Broker Ilminster Somerset

Marriages Dec 1898
Rawlinson  William     Manchester  8d 378
Woodland  Rachel     Manchester  8d 378

1901 census RG13 3751 folio 75
427 Oldham Road Manchester
William Rowlinson 55 Head Married Railway Engine Driver Roplsey Lincolnshire
Rachel Rowlinson 60 Wife Married Broker's Ilton Somerset

Earlier censuses - 1871 and 1881 give Rachel's maiden name as Webb.

As William was an army pensioner on the 1891, 1881 and 1871 censuses The National Archives will hold his army attestation papers but you may need to know what regiment he was in to access them. William's two children who were born abroad probably have their births registered in the army section of the GRO civil registration index. The overseas indexes of the GRO are not indexed on FreeBMD but you can access them on Findmypast.

http://www.findmypast.com/home.jsp

William's son Walter's records at The Royal Miliary Asylum Kings Road Chelsea (where he was in 1881) are also worth pursuing at The National Archives.

St Mary the Less (Little St Mary - as on the 1881 census for William's birthplace) parish registers are not covered by the IGI or the BVRI so it will be worth searching them.

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/CAM/Cambridge/StMarytheLess/index.html

Judging by a possible for William's death registration you might want to be a little more flexible in searching for him.

Deaths Sep 1896
Woodland  Walter William  63  Manchester  8d 220

I would also search for any possible illegitimate births for William which might explain why he is more difficult to find on the 1841 census.

Still brainstorming

There's a burial in Cambridge on FreeBMD of Elizabeth Woodland in 1846. Might this be the widow?

In 1841 there's an Elizabeth Wood.... transcribed as hams but I'm not convinced, age 36 with William 14, living in King St, All Saints Cambridge. William's age is wrong but who knows? Might be worth looking at a bit closer, but I'm less than convinced!

But whilst St Mary the Less may not be on the IGI or BVRI they have been transcribed by Cambs FHS and baptisms are included on the Baptism Index on their web site mentioned in my earlier message - and there is a Walter W Woodland son of James & Elizabeth in 1834, presumably the Walter aged 8 that Sue found in 1841 and possibly the 63 year old Walter William whose death in 1896 Valda found. Did he use William rather than Walter?

I am trying a different tack here and this maybe completely fanciful.
Could this young man not be who he says he is. Could he have taken the name Woodland as he didn't want his real identity known. Maybe he knew the Woodlands and liked the name.

No I haven't been at the sherry.  Grin Grin

That's always a possibility Sue, particularly when the army is concerned. Proving it might be a bit of a problem though!

I still fancy the Walter William Woodland (was he the original www) - it would need his death cert to see who the informant was, hopefully Rachel, and the address which might tie up with the 1891 census.

Walter aged 8 appears in 1841, but then disappears - no show in later censuses and no death in Cambs.

It would also need a check of St Mary the Less parish register to see if Walter's middle name really was William, as the Cambs FHS index gives only the initial.

Morning All,

Have finally received Walter Woodlands birth certificate 1870, and his mothers maiden name is given as Jane Woodland late Johnson formerly Partrington. So it is the correct marriage that took place in Bengal in 1860.

Am confused by Jane's name though..does that mean she was a widow prior to marrying William Woodland or does that mean she was christened Jane Partrington circa 1837 and her father died and her mother remarried and she took her stepfathers name.
can not find much info at all on PARTRINGTON except there was a Charles Partrington
who died in 1839 in Manchester, very little info on Census's on that name.

Any advice or comments would be most welcome
Thank you
