Hello there
I am trying to find a marriage for a John Finlay/Finley in Lamesley sometime before 1734. His first child arrived 1734 and the last 1757 in Lamesley so I am hoping the marriage may be there too.
Lamesley is not on the IGI.
If anyone has access to the records I would appreciate knowing if the marriage exists, and if so, what the details might be.
Many thanks
Ashley

Hi Ashley
You can check some church records in Durham using Genuki. I looked for a Finlay marriage in the early 18th century in Lamesley and in Chester le street using the "George Bell" data on Genuki but without success. I did notice a gap in the Lamesley records from 1730 to 1740 which suggests that the record you are interested in may have been lost. There is also the Joiner index http://www.joinermarriageindex.co.uk which covers the whole of Durham, but an exploratory search for a Finlay marriage in 1732 +- 2 (with soundex) came up with zero results. I also had a quick look at the Diocese of Durham Bishops' Transcripts, which recently came on line at http://search.labs.familysearch.org but unfortunately these records do not start until 1765.
All the best

Hi Gobbo
Many thanks for doing that research for me.
It is concerning that there is a gap in the Lamesley records - I will have to check with Durham and see if they exist or not.
I did see a marriage on the IGI in Gateshead in 1729 but that seems a bit early for births to carry on to 1757.

Hi Ashley
The Gateshead marriage is also in the George Bell index. You can find it at http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/Transcriptions/DUR/GAT1725.html
The index shows the marriage date as 31 Jan 1729*. The significance of the asterisk is that at this time the year ended on 24th March. Thus on our calendar the date would be 31 Jan 1730 and is just about OK especially if the bride, Mary Willson, was in her teens (you would need to track her birth to check this.)
All the best

My gr grandmother was 17 when she married and had her last child when she was 50. That is even a longer span than what you are talking about in this marriage.

Many thanks to both of you for your input and information.
I checked on the IGI and the John Finlay and Mary Willson who married in Gateshead did not have children there, which imporves the chances of their being the right ones.
I'll have a hunt around for Mary's birth but it is quite a common name, so it may be difficult to work out the right one.
Cheers
Ashley

Hi Ashley
I have just printed off a map of Durham parishes for my own research and noticed that Gateshead Parish adjoins Lamesley so I think it is quite a good candidate for your Finlay marriage. The map is at http://www.joinermarriageindex.com/pjoiner/genuki/DUR/durmap.html

Many thanks Gobbo.
Yes it is the next parish along. John born 1757 often said he was from Whickham which is the next one again. It is possible that he WAS born there but baptised at Lamesley. My GG grandmother was born in Bishopwearmouth but baptised at Sunderland because her mother did not like the vicar at BWM!
