Kiff Family
« on: Monday 12 May 08 20:18 BST (UK) »

Hi,
I am trying to findt he parents of ERNEST HENRY KIFF, born 1859 or 69.  He married Minnie Ashby in 1888 at Luton. I have his parents as SAMUEL KIFF, b. 1806 and SARAH SMITH, b. 1806, married at St. Albans in 1827  but I think that there is a generation in between - it seems a long time from marriage to producing a child, albeit others in between.
Ernest & Minnie were the parents of Stanley, who was my father-in-law's father, born out of wedlock to Emily Boden, living at 78 Inkerman Street, Lutonin 1914.
Any help would be gratefully received!!

Hi

On the 1881 census he seems to be the son of Sarah Stokes (widow) who was born c1838 Hatfield Hertfordshire. In 1871 he is listed as the one year old son of Sarah Kiff who was born c1835 Bramfield Hertfordshire.

A Sarah Kiff married a William Stokes in Camberwell in 1871 (3rd quarter)

Sarah Kiff born c1836 on the 1841 and 1851 censuses in Hatfield Hertfordshire seems to be the daughter of Samuel and Sarah who were born c1806.

If you want the full census entries please let me know.

Agree with above but will add a possible Marriage of a JOHN STOKES and a Sarah PERRY

On IGI Marriage 14th November 1862 at Kensworth Herts John's age 24 and Sarah as 28 Her Father Thomas

BMD Marriage Dec qtr 1862 ref 3b 962

If you have Ernest's Marriage date it will give his Father.

on 1871 Census Clara Ann Kiff daughter doesn't seem to be with them.

It seems like Sarah Kiff also had another child (out of wedlock) in Hatfield. On the 1881 census she is listed as Clara Ann Kiff born 1867 and she is with her mother and brother (plus other Stokes children).

You can see the 1881 census entry free of charge at http://www.familysearch.org/

In 1871 the child is with her grandparents (Samuel and Sarah) but she is listed as Charlotte Kiff born c1868

Probable Birth Registration

1867 Hatfield AMJ quarter 3a 333

Female Kiff

Clara Ann Kiff married Sydney Strapp in 1887 in Luton and by 1901 they had five children. Four of them are living with Clara Ann and Sydney but one of them, 9 year old Sydney W Strapp, is living with his grandmother, Sarah Stokes (and other Stokes children).

I hope some of the above proves to be useful.

Hi, DS & Pam,
Thanks for all you work re. the Kiff family, especially as I clicked onto Derbyshire, rather that the Bedfordshire county!! I have just received a PAF file from someone I contacted a couple of years ago, so I am ploughing through it slowly. It just seemed to be a long gap between Samuel, b. 1806 & Sarah,b. 1806 and the birth of Ernest Henry. I wondered if there has been a generation missed out. All your info is greatly appreciated, especially the illegitimate child. My father in law never knew his father, so had no history of the Kiff family. sadly, he died 4 years ago.
Many thanks once again,
