I find that the easiest way in some cases is to go to the contents page first to find the page number of the place that you are looking for.  It will be in the first few pages.  I then search on page number rather than the place name.  You will pick up a few references to the page but not many.

One word of warning.  Some directories only number alternate pages.

Searching the 1914 Kellys for Shortridge (using the most uncommon name) gives 12 hits.  11 of these are for Shortridge Street but none for number 26 or for Webber.

Hi Patricia,
You need to click  Find by Keywords
You then Select Location Durham
Select a Decade 1910s
Enter your own keywords: Shortridge
Then click Find Directories
When the directories are listed, in this case Kelly's Directory of Durham, 1914 click on Directory then Next Hit

Unfortunately South Shields does not have a Street Directory.

Interesting Stan.  I do it a completely different way.

First I find the directories for Durham by Location
Then I search these page by page for an apprpriate one.
Then I search that for "Shortridge" getting 12 hits

Same result different method.  However the crutial thing is using the most uncommon ketword, in this case "Shortridge"
