Newspaper obituary
« on: Monday 12 May 08 23:58 BST (UK) »

Hello,
I am wondering if anyone has access to a newspaper covering the Hebburn area.
I am looking for an obituary for Janet Middlemass who died at Hebbukrn  17 Sep 1903.

Also... what cemetery would she likely be buried in? She was  living at St. Rollox Street.
thank you

Well, she was 53 years old when she died.
She was married to John George Middlemass and her maiden name was Noble.
Her address was 4 st. Rollox St. Hebburn.

Does having a funeral notice such as Grant has found imply that the deceased and/or family had enough money to place it in the paper?
My Hargreaves lot in Halifax were not well shod and wouldn't have had much money.. so am wondering if chasing the papers is worth doing to find details that would lead to their  graves.

any comments much apprecaited.

Hi Charlotte

I don't think it depended on whether the family had money or not.

People I expected to of have a death notice placed i've not found.  Even people who died in the last 20 years i've not found notices for, so I would check out your Hargreaves, you might be suprised.

Cheers

Thanks jay.  Yes, I agree it varies now as to who has notices in apper etc. To do a lookup  one would have to know the exact date which means either  existing personal knowledge or having bought the death cert.
I just have my Hargreaves death Quarters from freebmd.
A death notice/obit is great stuff as it gives family names etc.
Never is an easy way, is there.

Hello Charlotte
There is an index of the Death Notices in the Evening Chronicle from 1885 to 1906 on the Genuki site for Northumberland under Newspapers. Any Hargreaves in the index I can find for you

Thanks Grant for that kind offer.  As far as I know, they all left Northumberland alive- emigrated to Canada.
