Census information Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Where next?
« on: Tuesday 13 May 08 18:01 BST (UK) »

I have been reasonably successful in tracing my own & my wife's family back to around 1800.  I started with the IGI and then moved on to viewing films of Parish Registers and looking at the various censuses.
But where now?  I am sure that there must be lots more information out there but just do not know what there is or how to access it.
I would appreciate any suggestions.

Parish Registers should not stop at 1800, in fact the formal registration of bapt. mar & burial began in Sept 1538, although in practice very few survive in full from that date for one reason or t'other.
if you mean other documents you can search you can try Wills, and burial indexes these are often verlooked but hold a wealth on informtaion as to their position in society and their income and also their relations at that time.

other places that spring to mind
register of voters
historical directories (historicaldirectories.org)
tithe maps
school registers
smallpox vaccination registers
local press

youc ould contact the local record offie to where you are searching or use the national archives (nationalarchives.gov.uk)
also A2A (access to archives) has a list of places that documents can be found.

What a lot of us do is look at the world our ancestors lived in, how they lived and the sort of lives they lead.

Hello Toni
When I said that I had got back to around 1800, I did not mean to suggest that the Parish Registers stopped at that date, but simply that was how far I had got so far!
Sorry to ask what is such a simple question, but where do I find the documents you suggested and how do I get access to them?

http://www.a2a.org.uk/

The A2A database contains catalogues describing archives held locally in England and Wales and dating from the eighth century to the present day

you can search these for the documents i mentioned on A2A and it will hopefully tell you where they are available.
