i am still hitting a brick wall with the horan side though - i am not sure where else to go for information now - any ideas ??

Hi Belinda

I have not had any dealings with the Horan family before and since you did not say where you were stuck with them, I have had to work backwards to try and find out.

I can track them back to the 1861 census where (the elders) are stated to be from County Mayo. That, in itself, is a bit of luck because most entries only say Ireland.

I was going to suggest that you try the County Mayo board but I now see that you have already done so.

If you registered with the site suggested and tried the free search with no results, then I really do not know what else to suggest. If the Irish experts cannot suggest anything else then it might be as far as you can go with them.

It is probably no consolation but you can be assured that there are numerous others (myself included) with similar "brick walls" if they have Irish ancestors. There seems to have been a shortage of records produced and then most of those that were produced seem to have been destroyed, until you get into the 1920s or thereabouts.

Sorry Undecided

ps I wonder where Alfred Baker was in 1901 Grin

Hello again

I do not know if this might make any difference to the outcome, but on the County Mayo board you have asked for Ellen Horan born c1834.

From what I can see, Ellen was born in c1852 in Stockport. Should you have asked for Mary Horan (who was born c1834) ?
