1871 census lookup - Bailes
« on: Tuesday 13 May 08 09:13 BST (UK) »

Hey guys,

I am hoping someone may be able to find the following family on the 1871 or 1881 census:

Henry George Bailes (DOB unknown) who married Mary Ann Bason (b abt 1844) in 1867 in Aston, Warwickshire

They had at least one child that I know of:

Harry Emmett Bailes born 1868 Sudbury, Essex

The family emigrated to Australia and Harry Emmett Bailes married there in 1887

Any help would be great Smiley

Hey Newfy,

Thanks so much for that, I had suspected that they went to Australia pre 1881 but can't find a passenger list as yet  Roll Eyes

I had hoped to find more children to the couple, as I can't see them having any in Australia but it seems that Harry may be the only one...

Henry's mum does seem very young, perhaps it is a mistake, it would make her 14  Shocked

I'll have to look into that one!

Thanks again so much

ooh, just had a look for Henry George Bailes parents marriage.

He died in 1932 in Esk Queensland, where he was a school teacher (looks like he kept that one up) the father's name was left blank but the mother was given as Mary Emmett.

Perhaps Henry George never really knew his father, as his family seem to know his mother but not his father's name....

Anyways I found this:

Dec Q 1844 Marriage between Henry Bailes and Mary Emmett in Exeter, Devon

So this family tends to move around a bit Exeter in 1844, Manchester in 1845ish, and Lambeth in 1861!

Who knows where they were in 1851  Roll Eyes

Good stuff !

and even more mobile than frequently seen - given she declared Longford Middx as her PoB in 1861, what took her to Exeter to marry? ..... she was still young, wonder if / when she remarried ?

Yep thought about that too, it seemed odd that a 30yr old widow would not be remarried already, and I had a look to see if there were any deaths for Henry Bailes between 1845ish and 1861 and the only one that comes up is:

Henry Bailes Death Mar Q 1860 Stockton, Co Durham/North Riding of Yorkshire

Which is a whole other area again  Roll Eyes

If this is her husband may explain why she wasn't remarried already in 1861 as he would have only been gone a year.....wonder what this bloke did for a living though as he sure moved around a lot!

There are a whole heap of marriages for Mary Bailes' between 1861 and 1871 so it might take a miracle to figure out what happened to her  Undecided

Interesting origins - and quite topical today given the Terminal 5 fiasco !
