Liz - I can't see Clara's birth on Qld bdm. Have searched from 1840-1850. Perhaps I should pack it in for the night It is Ipswich Qld and not England [as it was then]

Nothing for McCarthy before 1854 on the Qld Indexes. Wonder what year civil registrations were introduced. If before then may only be baptism records. Don't know much about Qld....should make an effort....tomorrow

Civil registration in Qld started at separation (I think) 1859. The records prior to that are church records and are on the NSW bdm (location Moreton Bay) as well as on the Qld list. Thus if on the bdms you can get a copy for $10 from a NSW transcription agent.

I assume this is them in NSW
V18473897 64/1847 MCCARTY CLARA JOHN MARY V18462152 63/1846 MCCARTY JOHN JOHN MARY
Looking at the AVRI the parish is given as Moreton Bay (Qld), Roman Catholic
I believe these early church records from NSW are available at state libraries and genealology centres - have to admit I have never checked, but someone on RC has mentioned same. Transcripts from NSW would be about $10 each.
