County or National GRO for certs?
« on: Tuesday 13 May 08 12:45 BST (UK) »

Hi folks,

Just a simple question really, has anyone had any experience with ordering certificates from the Kent GRO as opposed to the National one?

Just wondered if there was any advantage in using the 'local' one as atm the main office seems to take a couple of weeks at least to deliver a cert on a normal order.

Thanks LordOfKent

Hi

County Office for me.

Personally I always use them, can't fault them.

More often than not they will do a lot extra looking up than they should and always call you back if they cannot find the entry.

They also have local knowledge which has been offered and useful in the past.

It won't be Kent GRO, I don't think this exists, it will be the appropriate local registry office.

The advantage is that the certificate provided is slightly less likely to contain transcription errors.  If the index has been transcribed the information will be slightly different and usually more helpful in terms of where the event took place but the date range will often be wider than the quarter of the GRO.

The disadvantage is that you can't use the reference found on FreeBMD or Ancestry and so if the index is not transcribed you need to provide details for the search.

David is correct their is no sinlge Kent one.

Maidstone is the one I use and this covers roughly from Sittingbourne going southwards.

Medway and West Kent (Ashford) have their own offices.

Thanks to you both. I was of course thinking of Kent Registration Services, I am interested in the Gravesend area at the moment.

Gravesend was a registration district in its own right until 1941 when it transferred to Dartford.  Any records should be at the Dartford Registration Office.

There was a recent thread on Rootschat that some Register Offices are now charging £8 for a certificate Sad

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,302830.msg1846965.html#msg1846965

I'm not aware that any Kent Offices are charging more than the GRO but it is something to be aware of. Undecided

The last one I got from Ashford (several years ago now) was £7.50 (as opposed to £7 from the GRO) and an extra £10 if I wanted an "express" service.

Thanks again, I'll do a little checking before I order any certs, don't want to get caught by ordering from the wrong place.
