No. 1 Greenwood Street, Hunslet

My 3-great grandparents Blackburn are listed as living at subject address in the 1841 census. I can't find that street in present-day Hunslet. Does it still exist under a different name?

Greenwood Street was off Waterloo Road which ran fron Hunslet Road to Church Street. If you go to

The arrow shows the approx location. If you go to Google Earth you will see that the whole area has been redeveloped

Thanks so much for the information. I'm hoping to visit Hunslet this year and would like to see the places where my ancestors lived -- even if they're entirely changed now.

I used to work in Hunslet a few years ago. I rather suspect that the only buildings older than about 30 years are churches and the occasional pub. Be prepared to be disappointed.

Thanks for the warning, Nick. I rather suspected as much. I surveyed the area around where Greenwood Street once was with Google Earth. Lots of large flat-roofed factory/warehouse buildings. The only residences appear to be quite new.

Given the grim circumstances my ancestors lived in once they arrived in the States, I doubt whether their homes in Hunslet were either lovely or durable. I guess I'll just have to use my imagination for Hunslet past, and savor the rest of West Yorkshire in the here-and-now.

But thanks again for taking the time to let me down lightly.

Thanks, Osprey. That link was more than an assist for my imagination. I found a 1959 photo of the house my ancestors lived in in 1851 -- 4 Larchfield Street, Hunslet. Nicer than I expected. Gone now, of course, but the picture still survives.
