This is very odd.  I had exactly the same problem with the SMI cd yesterday.   AVG message about a trojan and not able to get into it.  I normally leave it in the CD drive as I use it so often.   I have not yet updated AVG.  Will try again this morning.  I was hoping that switching off would cure it but it hasn't and I am still getting the message.

To instruct AVG to ignore a warning on a program

1 go to Tools on the menu
2. Select Advanced
3. select PUP Exceptions
4. Click on Add exception
5. click on the small box to the far right of "File" and use this to browse to your location for the the program you want to give permissions to.

Hello Andrea and Kerry,

I think you can put it down to an over enthusiastic update by AVG.

I tried my SMI CD on the computer with McAfee - no problem

Put it in the one with AVG 7.5 and got the same warning as you two.

Put it back in the first one and still working no problem.

So it looks like you will have to follow Falkryn's advice to over-ride it for the time being.

Here is some information on this so-called malware:-

http://research.sunbelt-software.com/threatdisplay.aspx?name=Trojan.Agent.ABPU&threatid=168678

As someone else has mentioned it may be a false negative as I can't imagine the SMI people would deliberately infect you PC.

Do you need to connected to the Internet to run the CD.  It sounds like an SMI cookie to created when the disk is run and that cookie is identified (or misidentified) as malware.  It might well be you need this cookie to grab information from the SMI website.

Try running the CD without being connected to the Internet and see what happens.

Hello Downside,

The Sussex Marriage Index was published by the Sussex Family History Group a couple of years ago and I should think all our copies are well used by now.

The CD is stand alone, ie no internet connection required to run it.
I've just tried out your suggestion, and it still brings up the warning.

I did try excluding my G drive (DVD rom) from the resident shield yesterday but that made no difference at all so I will try your idea and hopefully that will solve the situation.

If it works can you give me exact instructions?    I could not even find the tools bit on AVG!    I am not very computer literate as you have probably gathered!

The idea behind PUP Exceptions is to identify individual programs to AVG which it thinks are behaving in a similar manner to Trojans or Trojan Agent programs but which you know are ok (or at least have no reason to distrust them) Unfortunately many copy protection systems fall into this category but creating a PUP exception should create a unique identity for AVG to accept that program and allow it to run.

If the CD does not require Internet access then I suppose it must be OK to disable AVG whilst you are going to just do SMI lookups from the CD.

If you launch Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete and click on the processes tab.

Scroll down and click on avgcc.exe and then press the End pPocess button.

If terms of starting it up again:

Start >> Programs >>  AVG x >> AVG Control Center.

Another method is to right click the AVG symbol in the System Tray on the bottom right hand side of your screen and select Quit AVG Control Center.

Hi downside, I get your point but you could guarantee I would get sidetracked and not switch it on again.

Sadly I may have to resort to that though because I've just tried Falkryn's idea and that didn't work either.  Cry

Right well I tried Downside's idea, and I got the Sussex Marriage Index CD to work - hurrah!

Only problem is AVG wouldn't restart without a computer restart and then in the middle of it all Microsoft decided to join in the act and start some updates.

I'm glad to hear you managed to get it to work - but it is a bit of an inconvenience having to reboot in order to get AVG to restart.

I'll have to check on that one and see what I find out.
