Trojan connected with Sussex Marriage Index CD
« on: Tuesday 13 May 08 16:31 BST (UK) »

Hi

I have just put my Sussex Marriage Index CD into my DVD slot on the computer to look up a marriage and got a message from AVG saying a Trojan Proxy ABPU has been identified and it won't let me play the CD.

There was a help page on the AVG site but everytime I try to search on Proxy ABPU it says unknown.  I am currently doing a full scan but knowing the new AVG I won't get any answers till about midnight tonight, the full scan takes several hours!

Any ideas why I have a trojan on a CD I use almost every day and exactly what is a trojan??

Quote
A Trojan horse, or Trojan, is any malicious program that installs itself secretly while disguised as or hidden within legitimate software. Once infected, the author of the Trojan can control the computer, steal sensitive information, and/or damage the system. Trojans are frequently distributed through unsolicited email attachments, and are also embedded within freeware and shareware programs.

It's possible that you have experienced a "false positive" - if the CD has a form of copy protection on it AVG may be identifying this wrongly as a trojan - that said there are some backdoor Trojans named ABPU and they are listed as keyloggers (ie they are capable of logging your key use and sending a file of this information back to some host)

PS Trojans are so called after a certain Wooden Horse left on the beaches of Troy.

I can't answer as to how the trojan got on the CD, (sounds unlikely if you haven't lent it to anyone) but did you know you can copy the info from the disc onto your PC, it's much easier to browse the copy directly than keep inserting the disc. Assuming of course it hasn't got some sort of copy protection on it, but worth a try.

Thank you for that.

Rather alarmingly the AVG scan has showed up a number of Trojans and stacks and stacks of Adware.  I thought I had dealt with it all the last time I did a scan last week.  But maybe AVG just detects it but does not deal with it.  I thought it did but I am not that impressed with the new AVG, its a bit slow and a bit of pain!

Hi Kerry

I timetable mine (my last remaining machine with AVG!) to run a scan everyday - fix a time when you won't be doing anything because it takes a while.

It seems to me that something has got in in the last week and the CD might have just triggered it Undecided

Now I feel a bit stupid.  AVG8 had repeated last weeks warnings because I hadn't moved them to the Virus Vault and done anything with them.   Undecided

I know at the age of 42 its a little later but I really ought to learn to read the instructions.  Roll Eyes

Is it just that CD, Kerry? Maybe try another one to see if it's blocking the DVD/CD drive.  Also - do you have a second CD drive?

Hi Gadget

Tried it in both drawers, same result.  Tried the Surrey Marriage Index - no problem at all.

How can a CD get infected?

It gives a file location where the infection is which I think I can find although it doesn't match identically my files but the file which is suffix .dll is not there  Undecided

It's not the CD that's infected, Kerry, as far as I can see. Unless something has written to it in the last week.  There's something wrong with the way it's reading it or scanning it, etc.

It might be worth you going to one of those online sites - say Norton or Avast (?),etc. and getting a free scan.

Alternatively, delete AVG and reload it.

Kerry,

I believe that the SMI CD does have some form of copy protection.

Use the CD yesterday with no problem.

I have now uninstalled AVG, installed again and it still has the same problem.  I did a shell extension scan  Huh and it came up with no problems and yet it just will not let me use the CD.

Phil

I had a look at the files on the CD through explorer but you can't get to the information.

I'm stumped and tired now and its time for bed and I've spent the entire evening trying to solve this problem and now I can't even remember why I wanted to look at the CD in the first place.  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Kerry

The SMI would have been a final burn CD, not one that can have anything else added. Once a CD has been finally burned nothing else can be written to it, so it is not the CD. Not quite the right terminology, but can't look up the correct one as I am at work. More than likely the false positive that Falkryn mentioned, or the copy protection.

If you have just upgraded the AVG software there could be something in there that is triggering it. Send AVG a help request, or even try SFHG. You may not be the only one that has the problem.

I know with Vista now you have to open the SMI as an administrator, and also the help screens that have the abbreviation lists do not work in Vista as they are the older format.
