I sent an email to the Sussex Family History Group earlier reporting the problem and asking for their help and have had a very quick reply.

The .dll file is something they no longer use, but of course it was on our CDs.  I don't know why AVG has suddenly decided to object.

Unless there's a change by AVG I guess it will mean copying the SMI files to the hard drive, replacing the sussmarr.exe file, and running from there.  The CD will still be needed in its drive when the program is started.

Let's hope they find a solution soon.

How big are the SMI files, Kerry?  You do have an external hard drive, I know, and they could be stored there.

I'm glad that I only have this one machine with AVG on it, if it's getting pernickety. I think that I'll delete AVG and install the free Norton that works fine on all my other machines Smiley

As an alternative, have you thought of Avast. i've heard some good reports of it.

I have heard good reports of Avast except that there are problems with compatibility with Zone Alarm?

It is such a shame about AVG, it has been so good until now but looking at the forums there seem to be problems all over the place.

SFHG have posted a temporary fix on their web-site, but I don't know what the long term solution will be.

http://www.sfhg.org.uk/smi/smiqueries.html

It also only mentions AVG 8, not AVG 7.5. I have responded to the posting on the SFHG Mailing List asking if the "fix" also covers 7.5.

And currently it only covers the 2005 CD not the 2004 CD which is the one I have but the webmaster is on to it  Smiley

I've just had another speedy response from the SFHG.

The fix should also work with AVG 7.5

This may be largely academic but stopping and starting AVG is quite easy.

To stop it:
Right click the AVG icon in the System Tray area and select Quit AVG Control Center.

To restart it:
Start >> Programs >> AVG x.x >> AVG Control Center.

When the full screen AVG Control Center screen appears just click on the minimise button located at the top right of the screen and you are back to normal.

The temporary fix for the 2004 CD has now been added to the SFHG site:

Thank you for that.

Rather alarmingly the AVG scan has showed up a number of Trojans and stacks and stacks of Adware.  I thought I had dealt with it all the last time I did a scan last week.  But maybe AVG just detects it but does not deal with it.  I thought it did but I am not that impressed with the new AVG, its a bit slow and a bit of pain!

Kerry

I found AVG slow, and switched to a-squared Free which is much faster. I have 2 hard drives totalling 380 GIG and it scans in about 2 hours

I think you will find that the problem lies with AVG's virus update file - something has gone awry.  It has happened before and is often fixed in a later update.

I've just encountered the same problem with my CD - had it for years.  I'm still running AVG 7.5.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that AVG will sort it out.

Erm just to say Nell might well be right.

I put my SMI CD in last night without thinking and it seemed to play normally.  It wasn't till later when I was laying in bed I realised.  It may well be sorted now then.   Grin Grin Grin
