Thomas Simons
« on: Tuesday 13 May 08 16:31 BST (UK) »

I'm looking for the birth/christening of Thomas Simons. He married Sarah Hinchcliffe on 30 Dec 1817 in Nottingham, so assuming he was born between 1780 - 1800. He had a son Henry in 1828.
Any info gratefully received as I can't seem to get anywhere on this. Hope this is not too vague.

Hi Smo180

Welcome to Rootschat.

I see that Thomas's wedding to Sarah and Henry's baptism are all submitted entries on the IGI.   Roll Eyes

Do you have Henry on census anywhere?

Yes, I have Henry on census from 1841 through to 1881. He died in 1897. It's Thomas that is provig difficult.

Who was Henry living with in 1841, I presume he was only 12?

Does Thomas' Henry's marriage certificate confirm his father's name?

Henry was living with his grandmother in the 1841 census. Thomas was still alive when Henry married in 1848 as he is on marriage certificate.
There is no mention of father on Thomas and Sarah's marriage certificate

Having the name on the marriage certificate doesn't always mean that he is alive, I'm afraid.
The fact that he is living with his grandmother may indicate that his parents have died.

There is a Sarah Simmons living in the right area of Nottingham, but no indication that it is the right one:

HO107/870/17
St Mary, Nottingham
Mary Simmons, 50, lacemaker, yes
Mary S, 17, lacemaker, no
Charlotte S, 15, lacemaker, no
Samuel S, 9, no

There is a gap for Henry, but the children weren't born in Nottingham as he was.

Henry was born in Rippingale, Lincs. Thomas was born, I am assuming , in Northampton

Northampton/Lincolnshire?! I'm not sure how we were to know those, especially as the 1841 census states that Henry wasn't born in Lincolnshire!

Why do you think Thomas was born in Northamptonshire?

Hi

So, Thomas married Sarah Hinchcliffe in 1817 and Henry was born in 1828, were there any other children born before Henry?

I presume that you have seen the PR's for Henry's baptism - do they give any more information ie fathers occupation/place of residence?
Does his fathers marriage give any witnesses or any other information.

Dear Rosie and Richard

Sorry, been a complete dipstick here. Trying to cover too many ancestors at once!

Henry was indeed born in Nottingham not Lincs. Thomas, I believe, was born in Nottingham but have no proof. Northampton was a typo.

I haven't seen PR for Henry, I guess that should be my next step

Many thanks
