Worth and the Matson and Flint families
« on: Tuesday 13 May 08 17:50 BST (UK) »

Hello,
I have a Charles Matson and Mary Flint who married in Ashford in 1789. The couple do not mention any children in either of their wills.
Charles died in 1791 and appears to have been a successful farmer in Worth. Mary died in 1843 when she was living in Deal.
I am trying to connect Charles to his parents but as yet no luck.
The 1841 Census  shows Mary Matson ‘of independent means’ aged 80 and living at Market Street, Deal. Mary has three servants recorded with her - Sarah Curling aged 55, Sarah Hawkes aged 40 and Sarah Paramour aged 20.
In her will Mary requests that '...she be directly interred in the Parish Church of the aforesaid (Worth) near the remains of my late husband and I order and direct that a handsome tablet be put up the said church to the memory of my said husband deceased
I have checked both Worth and Eastry and can't find a monument to Charles and/or Mary.
The only relative Mary refers to in her will is her brother Samuel Flint.
I know that the Matson family had links to the Hawkes family, but as yet I can't find Charles.
Can anyone please help with any knowledge of Charles's parents, the monument to Charles and Mary or perhaps some knowledge of the Flint family which may help me track down where Charles and Mary Flint cam from?

Hi,

Have you actually been to the graveyard of Worth's Church and looked for the grave, its just I have matson on my list of surnames for Worth, don't want to raise your hopes as will have to double check. Do you have any details on the name of the farm that Charles owned?

Regards

Hello cam 18.
No I'm afraid I haven't visited Worth church itself. I checked the information on this web site - http://www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/Research/Libr/MIs/MIsWorth/01.htm
and the information about Charles came from his will -
Matson, Charles. Farmer of Worth. Made 21st April 1789.  Probate 31st October 1791.  66/550a Canterbury Consistory Court.
I have both Charles and his wife Mary's wills, but the name of the farm doesn't appear in either.
I've got my fingers crossed hoping that your records can come up with something.
Thanks for your help.

Hi,
I haven't had chance to pop into worth to see exactly what Matson is buried there, but looking through more of my papers, I found that Eastry Church has a memorial (Monument) to Matson. I will endeavour over the weekend to pop to both Worth and Eastry and get you the details.
