YOUNG, Rebecca - traveller or not - census help required
« on: Tuesday 13 May 08 19:25 BST (UK) »

I'm trying to trace / confirm birth of Rebecca Young but am getting confused.
There are indications that she may have belonged to the travelling community, hence my reason for posting here on this board.

Death cert
Glasgow
1933 aged 49
Father William Young, slater
Mother Mary McAllister

Marriage cert
Glasgow
1918 aged 34
Parents as above
married Patrick Sweeney, aged 63

The only marriage I can find for William Young and Mary McAllister is in 1873 Glasgow.
William is 21 and a chimney sweep
Mary is 19 and a delf (i assume delft) hawker

1881 census
27 Stockwell St, Glasgow
William Young,30 Chimney sweep
Mary Young, 29
William Young, 5
Janet, 3
Rebecca ,1

Whilst the death and marriage cert for Rebecca indicate she was born c1884, this census indicates b1880.

I realise that I may be on the wrong family but the fact that I can only trace one marriage for William and Mary and the family in 1881 have a daughter Rebecca, I think this is more than co-incidence.

On the basis that her age may be wrong in later certificates, I widened my search for her birth and found a birth in Glasgow.

Birth cert
1880 27 Stockwell St
Rebecca to William Young, chimney sweep and Mary McAllister.

This birth is clearly the birth of Rebecca aged 1 in the 1881 census.

Had it not been for the discrepancy in the date of birth compared to her age on her marriage and death cert, I'd be certain I had the correct birth / family.

I've tried to search for Rebecca in 1891 and 1901 census in Scotland with mixed success. I only have access to ScotlandsPeople so searches are proving expensive.  I've found a couple that could be her where members of the household are hawkers but brothers / sisters / parents names do not tie in.

I'd really appreciate comments on my logic, particularly from anyone that has researched the Young family (from reading other posts, I believe Young is a common name in the travelling community).

I'd also REALLY appreciate it if someone has free access to census returns for 1881, 1891 and 1901 to look for Rebecca of the correct age with parents William and Mary.

I did find 2 families of hawkers called Young living in caravans in Kirkintilloch in 1901 with a 15 year old Rebecca but with different parents names.  However, the parents in the caravan next to it had the correct parents names but wrong ages.  I've not been able to get any consistent results with names of children.

I'm really confused but hope I've put all this info across clearly.
Can anybody help?

Dave

PS note to moderator - should I repost this on another board in case Rebecca's family are not travellers?

Hello Dave

Not much help I'm afraid but thought I would pass this on anyway.

1891 Census @ Catholic Orphanage for Females 72 Abercromby St
Glasgow Lanarkshire

Rebecca Young aged 10 Inmate   Born Glasgow

1901 Census @ 39 Annette Street Glasgow Govan Lanarkshire Servant with Schulman Family (Cabinet Makers)

Rebecca Young  aged 19  Servant     Born Glasgow.

May not be her but could keep in mind.

Thanks Pam,
I would not exclude either.
She's the correct age and might explain why I can't find her with parents / siblings.

I'm used to finding discrepancies in ages but this one to me seems to be such a huge gap, in a relatively short time scale.

If she was born 1880 as 1881 census or around the years these census results you've found suggest, -
If I've got the correct Rebecca, why the 4/5 year age difference by the time she marries in 1918?  If she was lying, wouldn't she make herself older (he's considerably older than her).
So many ifs!

Cheers for the effort of looking at those census results.

Firstly:

Chimney Sweep would correspond with a Romany ancestor. McAllister would probably correspond with an Irish ancestor, and that would be a likely correlation with a Romany traveller as the Irish travellers came over and continued their trades here in England and Scotland. On the other hand of course, it could be a Scottish name, and the mother was a Gorja.

Young corresponds as a Romany name. Some of the Hearn/Heron/Herring family took the surname Young, as well as Youngs being a Rom name in their own right. Its worth your while doing a check on Hearn/Heron/Herring and other variations in your search.

A William "Taiso" Young who married a Ruth/Rawny/Sue is a possibility. He was a son of Miller Heron aka Young.

Now ages, well the Rom didnt really know how old they were half the time. The old Crocodile Dundee comment about being born "In The Summertime" is kind of appropriate. So dont worry too much about exact ages.

Best of luck

Ann
