Local help Portsea/Portsmouth Please!
« on: Thursday 24 May 07 09:52 BST (UK) »

Kia Ora
Greetings from New Zealand

My great gran emigrated to New Zealand in 1878 & I am now trying to trace her English family "forwards"!  Huh

I have Francis Edward BURGESS marrying Caroline STRINGER 16 May 1900 at St Marks Portsea.  He was a Gunner in the RMA.

In 1901 they were both living at  33 Kassassin (?) St Portsmouth. I understand this to be St James ecclesiastical district.

Francis Edward Burgess died in Epsom in 1910.

I really want to know:

1.  If they had any children baptised at St Marks or St James say 1900-1910?
( This will give me a lead to ordering birth certs as I don't have any forenames)

2. I understand Portsea/Portsmouth was a strong military area - might  there be any other records I could search? (I cannot find Francis on the 1891 census for example.) Any useful websites?

3. Any ideas why they might have moved to Epsom - is there another military base there?

Very appreciative of any help, thoughts, ideas or factual info!
Thanks
Marlene

Dear Marlene

Try www.knightroots.co.uk - the Hampshire OPC site. Lots of Burgess references. Also on the Portsmouth site there are a lot of links to information about the area which might point you in the right direction.

Best of luck

Hi Marlene!

The area they lived in in 1901 is today locally known as Milton, Portsmouth.

It is possible that the local registry office will do a 5 year either way search for children for you.  This is only a possible depending upon how nicely you talk to them  Wink and how busy they are, but as you have both parents names, I'd ask, if it was me. (on the basis of what do you have to loose!) sadly Portsea do not have an email address, but if you want to PM me, I'll call them for you.

You might like to visit the local history center, if you have not done so already at http://www.portsmouth.gov.uk/learning/1042.html

But perhaps the way forward maybe thro' his military record Huh  or have you tried that already?  Sorry but I don't do acronyms when it comes to the military so please can you advise RMA ?

Hi All

Being Portsmouth and a naval base I would imagine that RMA stands for Royal Marine Artillery - There's a little bit of an explanation of dates and places here....

Yes Milly either Artillery or Auxilery  Grin but I think your right Royal Marine Artillery.  Wink

Eastney (their base at the time) is not very far from Milton.

Marlene, you may wish to make a post on The Armed Forces Board regarding him Huh  I'll look out for it.

Thanks Wendi & Milly. I don't know anything about his military career except what was on the Cert and the 1881 census entry when he was 14 but nothing ventured, nothing gained!
Off to give it a shot!

Hi Dale - I had a look in 1891 and couldn't see anything either.  I see the 1901 has him as R M Artillery so I think we are safe with Royal Marine Artillery for RMA.
My guess would be that he was away in 1891 - unless there is a mistake in census or transcriptions.

Do you have the 1871 Census?

I found this one which looks like it could be him... born Pimlico 1867 but the Ancestry transcription is so bizarre you should look at the original.  Is this the right family?
It gives his father as being in the military - I can't read most of what it says but did manage to work out the word Somerset. Also couldn't read his name but Ancestry have it down as Sergey which I am not convinced is right.  Mother Bessy. If you know his parents names (and siblings) you could try looking for children of those names first in case they named their children after their parents etc?

1871
Francis Edward Burgess
39 Clarendon St
St George Hanover Square
RG10; Piece: 111; Folio: 98; Page: 26; GSU roll: 838765.
age 4
Born Pimlico 1867

Father Sergey?? age 38 born Downham Cambride...military of some kind - poss a Somerset regiment of some kind
Mother age 39 Bessy born Carrington? Hants (Hampshire)
Charlotte E age 8 born Canada
Elizabeth M age 6 born canada
Francis E age 4 born Pimlico, Middlesex

I think his father's occupation was Messenger Inland Revenue Office, Somerset House.

As to his name?  Could it be Tengey - very strange
Think Betsy was born in Hunts.

H Bearkat..

You are quite right...so clear now you say it.  Definitely Inland Revenue and definitely Hunts.  And very likely it does say Betsy.   The Ancestry transcription is quite amazing.... Sergey is a woman and is a housekeeper. Bessy is a woman and is the wife of someone called Jane!   Who is also the father of the three children.... and then there another dozen families living with them in the same house Grin Grin Grin Grin

Ah well

I used to live in Kassassin street Eastney in 1981 - 85.  It is right on the doorstep of the barracks, and joins Cromwell road Eastney, I used to live there also lol 1975-79ish. The Royal Marine Barracks, although still standing has been turned into homes. As Far as I am aware the Royal Marines museum is still operating just down the road nr the seafront. St Georges road.

Hi Folks
Sorry! For some reason I didn't get a notification of your messages until Sandra's note today!
Yes the 1871 took a bit of finding but it's correct!
TINGEY was his the husband's mother's surname.  And he did work at Somerset House which I thought was particularly appropriate as it later became home to the New Zealand Embassy!
Betsy was born 1831 in Connington Hunts.
NOW if you're bored try finding the 2 daughters in 1891! I found them eventually!

I have all the family tracked - just trying to get those extra gems which make them human!

Sandra thank you so much for the update I might try the Museum for any additional info altho I now have his Military Record which is even more confusing because it has his wife as a Sarah not Caroline!

Still none the wiser as to whether there were any children born say 1900- 1908!
Cheers
Marlene
