Hi I am looking for my Grandfather Cyril Arthur Clarke - all I have is my Fathers birth certificate from India with his service nos. on it P/A/Condr. No.3975834 - I know nothing about him at all - not even when he was born or when he died or where.  From what I remember my Father said he was born abroad too - can anyone help?

Do you have even a rough idea of when he might have been born? Even your father's birth date and if he had any older siblings would give you a rough idea of when to look for your grandfather's marriage ( do you have your grandmother's name) and then it might beome easier to estimate his birth date.

There is a birth registration for a Cyril Arthur Clarke: Sept 1884, Marylebone 1a 600.

My father was born (*) he had one brother and a sister . His mother was Winifred Anne Clarke formerly Smith - thanks

* Modified to remove some names and dates - this is really quite recent and RootsChat does not encourage posting recent information.  Thanks

Are you sure about the Anne bit?

I found this marriage: June 1927, Sheffield, 9c 1370
Clarke, Cyril
Smith, Winifred M

Could they be yours?

She was known as Annie as she hated Winifred!

I am known as Jen - it doesn't mean it is my name!

Is she named on your father's birth certificate as Winifred Anne?

It is still possible that the marriage in Sheffield is theirs and that it has been wrongly transcribed by Free BMD.

Do you know where your father's siblings were born as, if they were older than him, this could help in tracing your grandparents' marriage.

Yes on the birth certificate it is Winifred. My fathers brother and sister were older than him - the brother has since died also I dont know about his sister she moved and we lost contact.  My Father died in 1985 - I have no other known living relatives.(whether my Aunt is alive I dont know)

Hi,

I definitely think your best way forward is to find the record of your grandparents' marriage. The one I gave you earlier is worth considering as the basic names fit with yours. Their marriage certificate would give ages, occupations and their fathers' names and occupations. From there you can almost certainly find them on the 1901 census.

Do you know whether or not your father's siblings were born in this country? Their birth certifictaes just might give you something else to work on.

Never hesitate to ask questions on this site. If you find even the smallest extra detail, it might mean that there is someone here who can help to go further back.

Good luck,
