Greyfriars Church in Carmarthen
« on: Tuesday 13 May 08 20:34 UTC (UK) »

My ancestor Thomas Rede was buried in the Greyfriars Church in Carmarthen in 1412.
Where is Greyfriars - I believed it was a part of St Peter's Church in Carmarthen or is it now gone and those graves are now in St Peter's.

Hi Robin,

On the Dissolution of the Friary in 1538 some tombs were moved to St. Peters Church.
Most of the remains of the Friary are under Lammas Street car park and I believe they excavated part of the site sometime in the 1980's before Tesco's built a store there.

Greyfriars, now buried beneath a shopping centre, was a Franciscan Friary which stretched from modern Blue Street (then the Wynfeth river) to what is now Morfa Lane (and, in the opposite direction, from what was then Lammas Fields to the river Towy). Your ancestor, Thomas Rede, is mentioned in various websites, including
CarmarthenshireHistorian.org
genuki.org.8080/big/wal/CMN/Llanstephan/Lloyd.html
I can't tell you where your ancestor is now buried but, for more information about the Friary, you can look at
acadat.com/projects/CGF/1997report.PDF
This shows illustrations of the extent of the Friary.
Good luck.
