I can't see the birth of older brother John (or is it Job?), which should be in Newport in c 1890 either.
Possible marriage
Jun 1883 Winchcomb 6a 617
John GREENING Elizabeth Sarah A WILLIAMS
No evidence for this, other than it is about the right time. Christina's birth cert would give her mother's maiden name, which might help.
In 1891 there is a family with Jesse and Elizabeth GREENING but in 1901 Elizabeth is a widow. Her children include a John of about the same age as yours (yours is aged 10 in 1901, the other is 12), which is muddling!

I think John is the son of a Hannah, seen in Ansell's Alley (same address as John in 1901) in the 1881 census. They are enumerated there as GRAINGER. John's brothers are Jessie (sic) and Richard, the latter seen in Monmouthshire in 1891.

I agree that is a strong candidate Tati.
Was hoping that son John would be to the fore & am concerned that he was born before marriage & therefore harder to trace! I wonder whether Thomas was too?

Hi to you all
Thanks very much for your help, it is very much appreciated. Thomas Henry is proving very difficult to trace, the sad thing is his son is still alive but does not want to talk about his family.
Anyway the marriage that you found for John and Elizabeth is not right I am afraid. I sent off for the marriage certificate and got an email back this week to say they could not produce a certificate for these two because although they appear on the same page they are not married to each other!
The witnesses that you have found seem to match up name wise but I cannot find any other connection.
I could not find the older brother John's birth either.
The John Green in Newport looks hopeful though. The son John according to the census should have been born around that time in Newport and I know there have always been connections with Wales that is why my Great Grampy, Thomas Henry, married in Wales and their first born, my Nan was called Blodwen even though she was born in Gloucester.
Thinking about the idea that Thomas and his brother were born out of wedlock, I might get Christina's birth certifcate for the mothers name and then look up the boys in the mothers name. It might be worth a try. I have got nothing to lose I have been trying to find Thomas Henry for so long, asking elderly relatives questions, hiring help by way of a researcher and the Gloucestershire Regiment in which he served and no body has any answers, so this might be the best hope.
Thanks again for the help
Paula

Hi Paula
I kept looking but nothing more helpful to report.
Just to add - Elizabeth might have made a second marriage, so the boys might have been born to the first marraige & not necessarily illegitimately - shame Thomas wasn't born before the 1891 census, which would make it easier to spot them!
I suppose you don't know of any older children?
I wonder whether there are descendants of Priscilla around who might be able to help?
Kind regards, Arranroots

Hi
Gloucestershire Family History Society has Cheltenham Registration District Birth Index 1837-1960, which includes Tewkesbury area, and the marriage index 1837-2004.
www.gfhs.org.uk
For some indexes, if contacted by e-mail, they will carry out a free search, for others there's a charge.
Regards
Susan
