Can you find an address in 1896?
« on: Wednesday 14 May 08 12:19 BST (UK) »

My mum's eldest sister, born in 1896, was not born at home but at another address, 25 Croft Street, Newton, N.Manchester.  Is it possible to find out who actually lived there at the time  I suppose it's highly probable that it was her maternal gran's address.

What was the name of the person you are looking for, and her mothers name?

My maternal gran's maiden name was Hobson, so the person living at 25 Croft Street, Newton in 1896 could have been her mother Alice Hobson who was a widow.  The other people could have been my gran's in laws John and Alice Cockett

The other suggestion I have is my grandad's gran, Alice Brand.  On the 1901 census, Alice Brand was living with her grandson, my maternal grandad, my maternal gran and their 3 eldest children.  She was also a widow long before 1896.

Jooles - Thanks for looking.  I can't think who else my gran would have gone to unless it was her eldest sister Elizabeth Jane Taylor (husband was Walter).

Toni - where would I find a street directory for 1896 or electoral roll?

Historicaldirectories.org might have a street directory for the right time, some are transcribed on Genuki

Electoral roles, these are a bit more difficult
i am not sure where they are held, in the local record office or public library ?

perhaps you could find out from A2A (access to archives)

Just to say that  Directories only show the householder, usually only if in a trade or business, and not other members of the family,  not all households are listed, and not all directories have street indexes.

OK, Thanks Stan.  The family were all butchers, so if I look for a butcher shop, I may find something.  It was only out of interest as when I was adding my aunt's birth details to my family tree program, I noticed she hadn't been born at home.

If you don't find anything, try reposting on the lancashire board. There maybe someone with access to other trade directories.
