1871 census
« on: Wednesday 14 May 08 12:51 BST (UK) »

Hi:

I'm looking for John CLOWES b 1852, in the 1871 census.  He marries in Sunderland in 1880, where he shows up in the 1881 census as an ironworker,  birthplace given as Bitchburn, which I think is incorrect Undecided

Thanks, Linda

Lindy - hi

I have found both the census records Wozzle has posted;  I have to say that this John appears to be the only one born about 1852 in Durham.

On both the 1891 abd 1901 census he says born Bitchburn.  In both of those he is a green grocer.  Do you have those two?

Many thanks ladies!

I couldn't find such a place as Bitchburn on Streetmap, so presumed it must be wrong?

Strange move of occupation from an ironworker to a greengrocer?  Less hazardous Grin

I would appreciate the 1891 and 1901 if you don't mind.

Thank you, that 's wonderful.

John's daughter Harriet married into my Nicholson family and she gave her son the middle name of Clowes.

Thanks Jay.

I assumed it was a wrong name because of the obvious connotation - but I forgot things were not so "politically correct" as they are today Wink
