can anyone explain the different registers? I can see that Ancestry has Pallots records, and can see that there is Phillimores and Boyds, were these regionilised? So if I have found one on Pallot I would expect another if living nearby to be in the same index? Or is it worth paying and searching other ones?
The family I am looking at the moment are in Hartland, but they seem to nip across the County border a lot and use Morwenstow Church which is a little confusing.
What sort of time scale are you looking at.? The Devon Family History Society has indexed all available marriage registers for Devon for the periods 1754 to 1812 and 1813 to 1837. It would be worth you asking for a printout for the name you're interested in- very little cost! go to http://www.devonfhs.org.uk/indexes.htm
The others you refer to are only indexes for certain parishes and certain periods of time. Useful but nowhere near as complete as the DFHS indexes. Family Search has some Devon marriages but they are taken from published transcriptions and again are nowhere near complete for Devon.

I am not in any hurry really, it is a project I come back to every now and again. I am visiting North Cornwall for a holiday this year - so thought I would bring a few things up to date.
I was just confused by all of these different indeces, and just wanted to be sure that I was paying to search the right thing.
Just had an amazing false alarm - the place we have booked used to belong to a Heard, and was called Forda - and we have a Forda farm with Heards in - but it turns out to be a different one....but it looks like there maybe a connection, but not as direct. So have been searching around today
