Photos/certs in Family Tree Maker
« on: Friday 16 May 08 18:26 BST (UK) »

I've scanned a few photos onto my FTM into  the 'Scrapbook' place and they are not too unclear. However when i attempt to scan certs or newspaper articles they appear practically unreadable!!

My scanner is an HP Photosmart.  When the photo/cert/article first comes onto the FTM Scrapbook page it does give you a choice of a few tweaks as it were  but no way can i come up with a readable/clear image.

Is there something i can do to rectify this please?  Poli

Firstly, how do the pictures look when you use My Computer?

Click on My Computer and go to where you saved the images after you scanned them.  They are probably in the folder My Pictures.

Windows uses Picture and Fax Viewer to display the images.  Change the View to Thumbnails.  You should see the images as thumbnails.

Do they look sharp?
Does each thumbnail fill the one inch square or is it just a tiny square surrounded by white space?

If it is just a tiny image surrounded by white space, then you may have to try the following.  I found that if I scanned an image without clicking Preview then it just created a small image.  So you may want to scan an image and then select Preview and once that is done, then select save to file.

Basically they need to look clear using Pictures and Fax Viewer.  If they look clear there, then they will look more or less the same in FTM.

Hello downside,     i was scanning the certs straight from the scanner to FTM, not saving them first into 'My documents' as i usually do with photos.

So----i'll do as you suggest and save the scans first and then follow your last bit of advice re the Pictures and Fax viewer. Thanks , will let you know how i get on. Poli.

I think FTM has it's own (variable) compression setting for imported images. I suspect that's why your scans are not looking so clever. Try setting it to 1:1 - I think the default is maybe 8:1 or some such.

Hi downside, i scanned the cert into 'My documents' . When i right clicked the image came up full screen size and clear to read. However, on the tool bar part of the image i had no choice for a thumbnail view. Only Halfsize--normal size--double size--full screen.

I imported the scan to FTM and by 'zooming ' in i can then read the cert clearly but only part of the cert at a time which i suppose is better than not being able to read it at all !!

I am now looking into Scottiedog's suggestion and see what else i can twiddle about with the image once its on FTM.

Hi Poli

I'm using FTM2005 - don't know about other versions, but I should imagine they're similar. Click on file, select preferences and then select the images tab. You should see a list of the available compressions as radio buttons - select the one you want.

Here's what you see in FTM2005

Hi Scottiedog, Same FTM as mine---Thankyou for explaining so clearly. Have now changed it to 1:1 as you suggest and will try sending some cert scans to FTM again. Will report back later.   Smiley Poli
