Thanks Scrimnet, yes I think she knows that, they were living in Leeds when  he enlisted.  I will check that she does though.  Can you tell that from his insignia?

And there is more if they need it...

For example, I could also date it etc...

Do they have any records etc??

Wink Clever thing!  They have nothing and he never told them anything.
Any thoughts that you have would be welcome.

Thanks,

Elin

Hi Scrimnet, This is what my friend just told me in an e-mail about her father.  She knows a lot more than I had thought!

"He was in the Green Howards, I have his discharge book - served in Germany and Italy  (and was prisoner of war in Italy - escaped twice and was re-captured) need to find out more from military records probably. Did they recognise the badge, then? I bet  he would have quite liked to have been a hot topic. He was only 19 on the picture. What a life, eh?"

Cheers,

Elin

OK then....

He is wearing the badge of Alexandra, Princess of Wales' Own (Yorkshire Regiment).

The badge was known as the "Eiffel Tower" because of it's shape...and the name of the Regt was changed to The Green Howards in 1920...

Now, as he is wearing collar dogs, this would date the pic to post WW1 for a start...

He has on a 1907 ptn Service dress jacket, and also has a stiffener in his hat.

He has no medal ribbons either...

The pic would not have been taken prior to 1918 (there are exceptions of course!) but collar dogs were not found on line infantry until after that date...and generally not until 1922...

The smudge at the top of the badge is in fact a coronet, and usually separate to the rest of the badge...

So all in all, a chap post WW1 and probably (as he has a 1907 jkt and not 1922 ptn) some time around 1920ish...

It may well be that he old stock uniform on and could be from 1936/7 ish, but deffo not after 1940 when this uniform was obsolete

Not too bad at all Scrimnet!  I am well impressed. Wink

I must admit that I thought you had got it wrong when my friend said that  her Dad was in the Green Howards.  I hadn't realised that they were originally the Yorkshire Regiment. I think that it must have been the old stock uniform and taken at the later date.

Thanks,
