Scrren Brightness
« on: Thursday 22 May 08 12:52 BST (UK) »

Is it  possible to reduce the brightness of the screen and still have readable text, please?

Also, if there are numerous pages of text to read which contain surnames can the name one is seeking be highlighted or coloured in any way to make it more obvious in the pages?

Screen brightness can be adjusted by the buttons on your monitor.  There should be a menu button and a plus and minus button.  Call up the menu and find the Brightness control and use the plus and minus buttons to alter the brightness level.

If you are dealing with text, but not text in an image, then normally you can use the mouse to highlight text so that it appears as white letters on a blue background, which helps to display the text and make it more readable.

Thank you for that information.  I have been finding that my eyes are blurring badly after computer use and any hints that make it easier to use are a real bonus.

Hi Gatacre

Nothing about adjusting your monitor but I suffer badly. The trick is to never be on you PC for more than about 30 mins and try not to look at the monitor too much. Also, use eye drops for tired/sore eyes - lots of brands to choose from.

I find that it's the constant scrolling and looking at census images and any close up/detailed photo restores that starts mine off.

The drops really do work.

Hello Gadget

I think there must be quite a number of people who suffer from "computer syndrome". It is good to know of others.  Unfortunately, I was told that I have glaucoma  and not to look at bright light and, also, to wear sunglasses .  To make matters worse I have dry eyes and the beginning of cataracts so do get all manner of drops on the NHS..

I read an advert for pin hole specs and wondered if they might help.  I think that  following the advice from Downside will make a difference. However, as you say, using the computer for shorter lengths of time is a route to follow.

Just wish I could touch type quickly and not making too many mistakes would make life a lot easier.

To highlight specific words or even phrases (depending on which program you use) try using Ctrl F (Control Key and F key)
In most programs this  brings up the the find function  .... type in the word you want to find and click on find or next and each instance of the word is then highlighted.

Firefox browser goes one better and has a highlight all function as part of the find set up when viewing web or html pages

Snap - but not full blown glaucoma (Mum had it)  - just high pressure(28-30)  but field tests are normal. Also dry eye.

I can touch type - but you should see my mistakes  Grin

Thank you, Falkryn.  I will follow your advice.  It would make a great difference as I am receiving quite a lot of texts about the formation of the western counties in PA, USA  which contain lots of surnames and I have found looking for any that might belong to me has proved very taxing on the eyes.  All the help from Roots Chat is a boon.

If you are using Windows XP try checking out the "Accesibility Wizard" which can often be found via "All Programs" - generally either in Accessories or in System Utilities - it has various options for setting up the computer for a number of conditions which is especially handy if you are the only person using the machine.

I will do as you say.  I remember when we first bought a computer three years ago that I was told about finding individual names in text but forgot the procedure as we were TRYING to get above the bottom of the learning curve!.  Answers to problems are much better on Roots Chat which I did not use until last June and that made such a difference to the problems encountered.

There is only myself and my husband and he does not do any of the genealogy........just orders the groceries to be delivered .......the reason for buying a computer in the first instance.......and shops, online.

If all else fails then you may want to have a look at getting an anti-glare screen that fits over your monitor screen.

Do a Google seach on:

PC monitor anti-glare screen

Prices seem to vary, but the graphite filters are around the £30 mark.

Everything is really appreciated so thank you, once again, Downside.  It is best to know these tips as the computer is a good way of using up time some days and I would not like to be without its use, now.

After relying on letter post and the telephone for genealogy information for years the computer was a revelation.

I had the same trouble last week somehow my setting got messed up and i had big print and glaring Screen.I used the display option in the controle panel clicked on a few advance and un-ticked a square don't use something brightness? That made it better.I also changed a couple of windows setting. For about 2 days to rest my eyes,(I also have a small cataract) I changed from white background to black, when you do that all print is yellow. My eyes loved it,but i couldn't live it for longer than two days.If you can, it would be good for the eyes especially if you can spend a long time on the net.Takes a bit of getting used to though Grin

Celia  P.S. I fiddled about with the setting off- line when i accidentally lost everything on my P.C including my Internet connection Cry

Celia

Thank you for telling me of your experience it all helps to know what others have encountered.  I have been trying some of the remedies kindly given yesterday.  I think it is what one finds can be the best.  I know I have sometimes read  genealogy given by people who have put a very dark background to the information and that seemd OK but not for permanent use.
