Hi my name is Shirley, and I live in Australia,
I am trying to find the origins of my Gt Grandfather,Robert Lowdon,born1843 in Cumberland.[earington]
which is Harrington I think,I found a Robert Lowdon Christened at All Saints in Cockermouth as  a three year old.,Robert Lowdon arrinton is definatly my Gt grandfather, but how do I find out if the second robert is the same person, and who his parents were.Going round and round and getting nowhere, can anyone in Cumberland help me.I would be so grateful.

1851 census has the following entry, transcribed as Lowder:

Joseph Lowder, head, 33, hand loom weaver, born Ireland
Sarah, 34, wife, Ireland
William, son, 12, Ireland
Robert, son 10, Cumberland, Cockermouth
Joseph, son 7                 "
James, son 4                  "

That puts Robert's birth date as 1841 but it's the closest I have found so far.

His marriage certificate would give his father's name and occupation, if you can find it.

Hi both and Welcome to RootsChat Shirley  Smiley

I can see your problem - there seem to be 2 different Robert Lowdons around, same age, born Cumberland (one in Harrington, the other in Cockermouth), and both married to an Ann, so at first sight the Cockermouth one isn't yours ...  Undecided

Do you know Ann's maiden name? If so you could purchase the marriage certificate, which should (hopefully!) show Robert's father's name.

And if you don't have Ann's maiden name, it will be on your grandfather's birth certificate.

Hi Jen,
Another dead end I"m afraid,no sign of a marriage certificate,he just turns up again in Prudhoe in the Census there, where he already has a wife [Ann Gibbons]of Burnopfield Durham born 1844,she was living at home with her father in1871,with a couple of kids, where do I look now.

Goodness me this is a tricky one isn't it.

I am struggling to find him in 1861. Have found the entry for 1871 which you mentioned and the only possible marriage is in Chester le Street, 1876 10a/680 but the Ann on that page is named Robson not Gibbons.

I will keep looking and let you know if I find anything to help.

Shirley,

Don't worry about being computer savvy. We all had to start out somewhere and I imagine that a great many of us can only use the computer in a very limited fashion and only then, in quite specific areas. I am certainly in that category. More to the point is that you have come to the right place to find help in researching your family. There are dozens, no hundreds, of people here who will be more than willing to help and some of them are far more skilled at finding lost ancestors than I am.

Do you actually have your grandfather's birth certificate? If so, can you let us know what it says as any little clue could be useful.

If you can post exactly what you know for certain about your grandfather, great grandfather and great grandmother - names, dates, places, occupations, I am sure someone will be able to help.

Noone's family history is boring.

I have to do more mundane things today but if nobdy else picks this thread up, I'll get back to it as soon as I can and see if I can do any more for you. Unfortunately, I live in South Cumbria rather than North, otherwise I'd be able to get to the relevant records offices.

Keep digging and you will get there eventually,

I have found in the 1881 census a Sarah Lowden widow age 64 living in St Helens St [Wide yard ] Cockermouth.
Living with her is her unmarried son Thomas age 26,and unmarried daughter Hannah age 24,and her grandson John James aged 3 years.
Sarah lives three doors away from James Lowdon age 32, and his wife and family, the ages and first names fit,but not the spelling of the surname,to confuse things even more, there is a Joseph Lowden age 36, and his wife and family living in the next house to James, are all these people related.Have I followed the wrong Sarah Lowden.Any suggestions where to try next. This is a complicated one, isn't it Shirley?  Undecided

He never gives Cockermouth as his birthplace therefore I'm not too keen on claiming a Cockermouth family yours without any hard evidence.

Now I've searched census for other Lowd*ns born Harrington and there don't seem to be any. Harrington would register in Whitehaven I believe so I searched BMD for Lowdons in Whitehaven and the earliest birth I could find was a Jane Lowdon in 1847. I think I've spotted her in 1861 with parents Thomas and Jane, both old enough to have had a son about 1843, but I'm unable to find the family in 1851 to see if they have a Robert with them  Sad
